Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Sublime Text and Spectral Notes.

What makes your product unique?

Spectral Notes's answer:

No single feature makes Spectral unique, but the combination of these features do (otherwise I wouldn't have built it):

  • A summoning feature on desktop; bringing my notes to me wherever I am instead of hunting for them in the browser/another app
  • Offline availability (happy side-effect: blazing fast speed with no load times when writing/searching/editing notes)
  • Sync with my phone, even if it's online, it'll catch up when I get back on
  • Just enough task-management features to keep things organized, but not so many that I have to 'manage the manager'
  • An ultra-quiet UI that doesn't yell at me with buttons, sidebars, icons, dots, burgers, and so on
  • A super intuitive UX that places what the user needs where they need it (no scouring for menus or hidden settings)

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Spectral Notes's answer:

Choose Spectral if you want something lighter than a full-on workspace, more reliable than sticky notes, and more structured than sending yourself a WhatsApp message. It is for quick capture, simple organization, offline use, cross-device sync, and light task follow-through without project-management overhead.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Spectral Notes's answer:

People who capture small notes, lists, links, and follow-ups throughout the day and want them available later on desktop and mobile in an easy to search format. It is especially suited to solo builders, writers, researchers, operators, and practical note-takers who want search, tags, priorities, and today lists without maintaining a larger system.

What's the story behind your product?

Spectral Notes's answer:

I found myself sending myself notes on WhatsApp whenever I had an idea/small task/recipe I wanted to remember, etc. I even had a dedicated little group with myself. Super convenient to scribble something down, but terrible when it came to:

  • Finding the thing later
  • Updating it if I wanted to track it over time
  • Prioritizing one scribble over another

And needless to say the little group became a mess quite quickly.

So I searched (a lot) for something that answered all my needs: sync, offline, organization, the summoning feature - but anything I found either wouldn't "just work" (looking at you, Raycast) out of the box, or ended up having UIs that were too messy for me. I wanted something ultra minimal, but still powerful enough to manage my notes like a normal human being.

Hence: Spectral.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Spectral Notes's answer:

Tauri (for desktop use), Cloudflare Pages (hosting), Supabase (Auth, DB, Sync), React & TS (UI), and local-first browser storage for offline access.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

Spectral Notes's answer:

  • Me
  • My girlfriend (fingers crossed)
  • Some guy from Reddit
  • Someone I used to work with
  • A guy I climb with
  • My little brother

though "customers" is a bit of a stretch as Spectral is free
