What's the story behind your product?

Not A Translator's answer:

It started from a simple frustration: translating a word to my native language never actually taught me anything — I'd forget it five minutes later, and I didn't want to lose my reading flow every time a word escaped my understanding. So I built a tooltip app that shows the definition in the language I'm reading instead, which forces just enough extra effort to make the word stick. this started in 2020-21. It's grown since then into a small ecosystem — unit/time conversion, an optional PDF reader, and deeper lookup tools for supporters. All with ferature requests from family and friends who use it.

What makes your product unique?

Instead of swapping a selected word for its translation, Not A Translator shows the word's definition in the language you're already reading — via an inline tooltip triggered from the right-click menu. That's the difference between translating and actually learning. It also converts units and times inline, and supporters can unlock deeper features like a contextual synonym/etymology map (SenseMap & RootMap), an integrated PDF reader, and dark mode support.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Most translator extensions just swap a word for its equivalent in your language — convenient, but you forget it five minutes later. Passive tools replace random words for you, so you don't control what you learn. Not A Translator stays out of your way until you actually need it: select the word you don't know, right-click, and get its definition in its own language, right where you're reading. A one-click translation is still there for when you just want the quick answer. intuitive, cosy...

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Not A Translator's answer:

People learning a language, expats reading news or documents in a language they're still working on, students, and anyone who doesn't want to leave the page every time they hit a word they don't fully understand.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Not A Translator's answer:

A Chrome/Firefox browser extension built in JavaScript. It uses Readability.js for clean text extraction and PDF.js for the integrated PDF reader, with graph rendering for the SenseMap/RootMap features handled via TouchGraph. Development was old school coding thrn it has been AI-assisted since version 4.0-5.0. Supporter features are gated through a lightweight token system, verified via a Cloudflare Worker and a small backend.
