Eider is the free, easy way to split shared expenses whether on a trip or at home, then settle up simply.

No ads. No paywalls on the essentials. No limit on the people or expenses you track. Just a well-made ledger that does the math so nobody has to keep a mental tally.

HOW IT WORKS - Start a nest for your trip, your household, or whatever you share. - Add an expense in seconds. Eider remembers your usual split. - See a running balance of who owes whom, simplified down to the fewest payments. - Settle up through the app you already use: Venmo, Cash App, PayPal, Zelle, or Apple Cash. Eider records it, and it never touches your money.

BUILT FOR REAL LIFE - Made for trips: throw every flight, cab, cabin, and dinner into one place and walk away square. - Just as good at home: rent, groceries, utilities, and the everyday back-and-forth. - Split any way: evenly, by percentage, or exact amounts. - Set a standing split once and forget it. - Recurring expenses for rent, utilities, subscriptions, and anything else.

FREE, AND NOT A TRIAL Everything above is free. No ads, and no cap on the people or the expenses you track.

EIDER PLUS - $8.99 a month, or $89.99 a year - Scan a receipt and let Eider read the merchant, date, and total off it. - Split one receipt line by line instead of evenly. - A searchable library of every receipt your nest has captured. - Spending patterns, period reports, and a monthly digest of where the money went. - Connect a bank account and bring transactions in automatically.

Plus is a personal membership rather than a per-nest upgrade. An annual membership also shares receipt scanning and line-item splitting with everyone in the nests you create.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing SplitterUp.app and Eider.

What makes your product unique?

SplitterUp.app's answer

One price, everything included. Most expense splitting apps either charge monthly or lock features behind tiers. SplitterUp is $4.99 once — receipt scanning, multi-currency, settlement optimization, all of it.

Receipt scanning you actually use. Photo to itemized split in seconds. Tap items to assign them to people. No typing in amounts manually.

Your spending data isn't the product. No ads, no tracking, no selling your financial data to third parties. That's the whole point of charging upfront instead of being free.

Eider's answer:

Eider records, it doesn't enforce. There is deliberately no way to reject, dispute, or counter what someone else added, because an app arbitrating between housemates was never going to settle anything a conversation couldn't. Most splitters are built around approval flows that quietly frame the people you live with as counterparties. The second thing is that the free tier is genuinely uncapped: unlimited expenses, members, nests, and history, with no ads. Free is the product, not a trial. And Eider runs natively on iOS, Android, and the web from one account, which is rarer in this category than it sounds.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

SplitterUp.app's answer

Splitwise charges ~$5/month for features SplitterUp includes for $4.99 once. Tricount is free but ad-supported and limited. Most other apps either nickel-and-dime you with subscriptions or make money from your data.

SplitterUp gives you receipt scanning, smart settlements, multi-currency, iPad support, and spending insights — all included from day one. No daily expense limits, no feature gates, no upsells.

It's also the only one in the category that doesn't run ads or sell user data. Your spending habits, who you split with, where you eat — that stays yours.

Eider's answer:

Three concrete reasons. Free has no daily expense limit and no ads, so you never hit a wall mid-trip and get asked to pay to finish adding dinner. Paid is a person-held pass rather than a per-person tax: one annual subscription covers everyone in the nests you create, so a six-person trip is one subscription instead of six, all year rather than for one 30-day window. And Eider is on iOS, Android, and web, so nobody in the group is left on a worse version because of the phone they own. Everything else is a well-made ledger that does the math and stays out of the way with beautiful design and user experience.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

SplitterUp.app's answer

Anyone who splits expenses regularly — roommates, friend groups, couples, travel buddies. If you've ever passed your phone around a dinner table trying to figure out who owes what, this is for you.

Particularly useful for people who travel in groups or share a household, where expenses pile up fast and manual tracking falls apart.

Eider's answer:

People sharing money with people they actually know. Three groups in practice: roommates and households splitting rent, groceries, and utilities month after month; couples keeping a shared ledger without merging finances, and friends on a trip who want to walk away square rather than argue about it or venmo after every single transaction. Households are the ones who stay, trips are how most people find it. It works identically for one person keeping their own record, with no pressure to invite anybody.

What's the story behind your product?

SplitterUp.app's answer

Built by a solo developer with 20 years of backend and systems experience who got frustrated with Splitwise's interface and decided to build something better. Started after a layoff, went from zero mobile development experience to a shipping app in 30 days. The whole thing came from splitting expenses with his wife using a notes app because Splitwise felt like a web app crammed into a phone.

Eider's answer:

An eider is a sea duck, and eiderdown is the softest natural material on earth. The birds line their nests with it. That is the whole idea: sharing money with people you love should feel soft rather than stressful, so the app's word for a shared space is a nest. It was built by one person, Robert Henderson, under Loftery LLC in Colorado, after too many trips that ended in a group chat, a notes app, and somebody quietly eating the difference.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Eider's answer:

  • TypeScript across a Turborepo monorepo, with the business logic shared between platforms
  • Next.js on the web, deployed on Vercel
  • React Native and Expo on iOS and Android, shipping updates over the air
  • PostgreSQL on Neon, with Prisma
  • Better Auth, including Sign in with Apple and Google
  • TanStack Query for data and Tailwind CSS on the web
  • Cloudflare for DNS and the realtime sync layer
  • Sentry, PostHog, and Resend
  • Stripe, Apple In-App Purchase, and Google Play Billing
  • Plaid for bank connections
  • Claude for reading receipts
