Possible disadvantages of Short.io

  • Pricing
Some advanced features are only available in the paid plans, which might be too costly for small businesses or individual users.
  • Limited Free Plan
The free plan comes with limitations on the number of custom domains and links that can be created, which may not be sufficient for heavy users.
  • Learning Curve
While generally user-friendly, some advanced features and integrations may require a bit of a learning curve for new users.
  • Support
Customer support may not be very responsive on the free plan, potentially leading to delays in resolving issues.

Source Engine features and specs

  • Highly moddable
Source Engine has one of the most robust modding communities in gaming history. Its SDK and tools like Hammer Editor allow modders to create entirely new games, maps, and total conversions. Iconic titles like Garry's Mod and countless Counter-Strike maps were born from this openness.
  • Excellent physics system
Source Engine integrated Havok physics (and later its own systems) to deliver impressive and realistic physics interactions, particularly showcased in Half-Life 2 with the Gravity Gun. The physics-driven gameplay was groundbreaking at the time of its release.
  • Strong multiplayer and networking
The engine features a highly optimized client-server networking architecture that made it ideal for competitive multiplayer games like Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2. Its netcode is known for being reliable and well-suited for fast-paced online gameplay.
  • Efficient performance on low-end hardware
Source Engine is remarkably well-optimized and can run on a wide range of hardware configurations, including older and lower-spec machines. This broad accessibility helped Valve's games reach a massive audience and remains an advantage for developers targeting wide hardware compatibility.
  • Facial animation and storytelling tools
Source Engine pioneered advanced facial animation technology using a blend of phoneme-based lip syncing and muscle-based expressions. This system was highly praised in Half-Life 2 and its episodes for creating believable, emotionally expressive characters that enhanced narrative-driven gameplay.

Possible disadvantages of Source Engine

  • Aging architecture
Source Engine's core architecture dates back to 2004 and is built on code that traces its lineage to the original Quake engine. This aging foundation makes it increasingly difficult to implement modern rendering techniques like ray tracing, global illumination, and large-scale open worlds without significant workarounds.
  • Limited large-scale environment support
The engine uses a BSP-based map system with hard limits on map size, brush complexity, and entity counts. This makes it poorly suited for creating large open-world or expansive outdoor environments, often requiring developers to break content into smaller, loading-screen-separated levels.
  • Difficult and outdated development tools
While the Hammer Editor is powerful, it is widely considered unintuitive and difficult to learn compared to modern editors like Unreal Engine's or Unity's. The workflow and interface feel dated, which can increase development time and steepen the learning curve for newcomers.
  • Closed-source and limited licensing
Unlike engines such as Unreal Engine or Unity, Source Engine is not freely available for commercial licensing to the general public. Access to the full engine source code is restricted, and obtaining a license for commercial projects outside of Valve's ecosystem has historically been difficult and opaque.
  • Sparse official documentation
Valve has been inconsistent in providing comprehensive and up-to-date official documentation for Source Engine development. Much of the community's knowledge is maintained through the Valve Developer Community wiki and forums, meaning developers often have to rely on community-sourced information that may be incomplete or outdated.

  • URL shorteners and why would you need one?
Choose a shortener: Pick a link shortener that fits your needs---many offer options like custom branding, QR code creation, and analytics. Ziplink, Short.io, and Bitly are all capable of that. If you are looking for something really simple, you may want to check out TinyURL as well. - Source: dev.to / over 1 year ago
  • Whatโ€™s the best way to share video with a single-use link?
Same, but a little more elegant is short.io. It's a link shortener, but with a $19/month plan you can add a ton of customization to your links. One of those being limit on clicks. Same problem here that the file is still hosted elsewhere and available if they happen to copy the URL from the address bar. Source: over 3 years ago

  • Compatibility with Short.io
Just tried it and https://short.io only allows domains that end with specific TLDs (ICANN's list). So while nothing in Handshake is blocking the service, the service needs to loosen up the restrictions to be able to link handshake names. Source: about 4 years ago
  • Someone on here posted a link to their podcast a few months ago and apologized for it being a linktree. Is that bad?
Https://short.io on their free tier you can make a smart link like listen.yourdomain.com that sends an apple mobile user to your podcast on iOS, an android mobile user to your podcast on google's podcast app, and a desktop/laptop browser to your website. Source: about 4 years ago
