My 2c from lots of remote math tutoring, and one coding-for-fun middle school student: - student motivation is everything. Hard to motivate thru a screen and with cameras off. Hard to keep them engaged or recognize if they're engaged. Less of an issue with adult students. - reduce friction for students as much as possible. Ideally one web tool, zero installs. I recently tried the new Oku Club app for iOS, and I was impressed by what few brave guys were able to do against the Amazon/Goodreads giant. Just the b/w minimalistic style and the goodreads user data importer are selling points to me. Goodreads is truly lacking, but because it has no competitor they are doing nothing to improve.
