I made WatchDog because I was tired of the little wave of panic every time I had to leave my MacBook on a cafe table to grab a coffee or run to the restroom.

Here is how it works. You arm it before you step away. If someone touches or moves your Mac, it sounds a loud alarm and pings your iPhone right away, so you can turn around and catch it in the moment. There is a small companion app for your iPhone called WatchDog Key that arms and disarms it for you, and it knows when you are nearby over Bluetooth, so it stays quiet while you are sitting right there.

Most theft tools only help you find your laptop after it is already gone. I wanted the opposite. Something that makes a scene the second someone reaches for your Mac and scares them off before they get out the door.

Arming and the proximity check work offline over Bluetooth. You only need internet to get the alert on your phone. And it never touches your files or anything on your Mac. It just watches the laptop, not you.

s3-lambda features and specs

  • Batch processing of S3 objects
s3-lambda provides a straightforward way to perform batch operations on large numbers of S3 objects, enabling map, filter, and reduce-style processing over entire S3 buckets or prefixes without writing boilerplate code.
  • Familiar functional API
The library uses a functional programming paradigm with operations like map, filter, and reduce, making it intuitive for JavaScript developers to process S3 objects using patterns they already know.
  • Built-in concurrency control
s3-lambda handles parallel processing of S3 objects with configurable concurrency, allowing users to control how many operations run simultaneously and avoid overwhelming AWS resources or hitting rate limits.
  • Context-aware operations
The library provides a context object within each operation that includes useful metadata about the current object being processed, simplifying access to S3 object properties during transformations.
  • Easy integration with Lambda
Designed to work seamlessly within AWS Lambda functions, making it straightforward to set up event-driven, serverless pipelines for processing large volumes of S3 data without managing infrastructure.

Possible disadvantages of s3-lambda

  • Unmaintained project
The repository appears to be no longer actively maintained, with limited recent commits and unresolved issues, which raises concerns about long-term reliability, security patches, and compatibility with newer AWS SDK versions.
  • Limited documentation
The project's documentation is relatively sparse, lacking comprehensive examples, edge case handling guidance, and detailed API references, which can make it challenging for new users to adopt effectively.
  • AWS SDK version dependency
The library depends on an older version of the AWS SDK for JavaScript, which may conflict with projects using the newer AWS SDK v3 and could miss out on performance improvements and features in updated SDKs.
  • Limited error handling flexibility
The built-in error handling mechanisms are relatively basic, and handling partial failures or implementing sophisticated retry logic for individual object operations requires additional custom code from the developer.
  • Narrow scope of functionality
The library is tightly focused on S3 object processing and does not integrate with other AWS services or provide utilities beyond basic map/filter/reduce operations, limiting its usefulness in more complex data pipeline scenarios.

Why this product is good

  • Simplifies common S3 batch operations (map, filter, reduce) with a clean, functional API
  • Leverages AWS Lambda for scalable, serverless parallel processing of S3 objects
  • Reduces boilerplate code for iterating over and transforming large numbers of S3 objects
  • Open-source and free to use, allowing customization for specific workflows
  • Integrates well with existing AWS infrastructure and Node.js applications

Recommended for

  • Developers building serverless data pipelines on AWS
  • Teams needing to process or transform large sets of S3 objects without provisioning servers
  • Node.js developers looking for a functional programming approach to S3 operations
  • Projects with batch processing needs that fit within Lambda's execution limits
  • Prototyping or small-to-medium scale ETL tasks involving S3 data

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing s3-lambda and WatchDogApp.de.

What makes your product unique?

WatchDogApp.de's answer:

WatchDog is one of the few Mac anti-theft tools that reacts in the moment instead of after the fact. Most options only help you locate your Mac once it is already gone. WatchDog sounds a loud alarm and pings your iPhone the instant someone touches or moves your MacBook, locks the screen, and resists quick shutdown attempts, so a thief gets noticed before they can walk away.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

WatchDogApp.de's answer:

Trackers like Find My and Prey are recovery tools that help you chase your Mac after it is stolen. WatchDog is a deterrent. It makes a scene the second someone reaches for your laptop, which is what actually stops a grab in a busy cafe or library. You arm it with a tap, it works offline over Bluetooth, and it never touches your files.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

WatchDogApp.de's answer:

People who work on a MacBook in public. Students in libraries, remote workers and freelancers in cafes, and digital nomads in coworking spaces. Anyone who has to leave their laptop on a table to grab a coffee or use the restroom and wants to step away without worrying it gets taken.

What's the story behind your product?

WatchDogApp.de's answer:

I work out of cafes and coworking spaces, and I could never relax when I had to leave my MacBook to grab a coffee or use the restroom. Find My only helps after your Mac is already gone. I wanted something that reacts in the moment, so I built WatchDog. You arm it, step away, and if anyone touches your Mac it sets off a loud alarm and pings your phone right away.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

WatchDogApp.de's answer:

WatchDog is a native macOS app with a companion app for iPhone. It uses Bluetooth for arming, disarming, and proximity detection, and push notifications to deliver instant alerts to your iPhone.
