Features and specs

What each product offers, as listed by its team.

Ruby 5 features
BetterMap 12 features
  • Ease of Use
Ruby is designed with a focus on simplicity and productivity. Its syntax is easy to read and write, which makes it accessible for beginners as well as enjoyable for seasoned developers.
  • Rich Libraries
Ruby boasts a large ecosystem of libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails, which speed up the development process and provide robust solutions for common tasks.
  • Community Support
Ruby has a vibrant and active community, which means lots of resources, gems (libraries), and forums are available for learning and problem-solving.
  • Dynamic Typing
Ruby's dynamic typing allows for more flexible and rapid development, as it doesn't require variable type declarations and allows for more expressive code.
  • Meta-Programming
Ruby has powerful meta-programming capabilities that allow developers to write more abstract and flexible code, reducing repetition and improving code maintainability.

Possible disadvantages

  • Performance
Ruby is generally slower compared to languages like C, Java, and Go. This can be a significant drawback for applications where performance is critically important.
  • Concurrency
While Ruby has some support for concurrency, it is not as robust as in other languages like Java or Erlang. This can be a limitation for highly concurrent applications.
  • Memory Usage
Ruby applications tend to consume more memory compared to those written in other languages, which can be a drawback for large-scale applications or resource-constrained environments.
  • Not Suitable for All Types of Applications
While Ruby excels in web development, particularly with Ruby on Rails, it may not be the best choice for system-level programming, real-time systems, or applications requiring fine-grained control over hardware.
  • Dependency on Gems
While the rich ecosystem of gems is a strength, it can also be a downside. Over-reliance on third-party libraries can lead to dependencies on potentially unmaintained or poorly supported gems.
  • AI floor plan conversion
Upload an image, PDF or CAD export and BetterMap generates a first draft of the interactive map, including shapes, floors and store names read with OCR.
  • Visual map builder
Refine anything on the map in a browser editor. Changes go live immediately, with no rebuild or re-upload.
  • Multi-floor navigation
Turn-by-turn routes across floors, including step-free routes for visitors who need them.
  • Searchable directory
Visitors search for a store, department or room by name and see it on the map.
  • Kiosk management
Run on-site touchscreen kiosks from one dashboard and manage the hardware remotely.
  • Website embed and mobile web
The same map embeds in the venue's website and opens on visitor phones in the browser, with no app to install.
  • QR code positioning
QR codes placed at known points show visitors where they are, with no beacons or app needed.
  • Promotions on the map
Place offers and campaigns directly on tenant locations.
  • Tenant sub-accounts
Each tenant can manage its own listing and content.
  • Visitor and search analytics
See sessions, what visitors search for and which locations they look up.
  • Self-serve onboarding
A step-by-step setup covers venue details, screens, team, branding, custom URL, visibility and public holidays.
  • Published pricing, free to build
Build maps at no cost and pay only when you publish. Pricing scales with floor area and is listed on the website.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Ruby and BetterMap.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

BetterMap's answer:

  • MY MALL Limassol
  • Kings Avenue Mall, Paphos
  • StartupCon, Limassol

What makes your product unique?

BetterMap's answer:

Most indoor mapping platforms start with a CAD contract and a quote request. BetterMap starts with the floor plan you already have. Upload a scan, a PDF or a CAD export, and our AI pipeline turns it into a first draft of an interactive map in minutes. It detects shapes, splits a directory sheet into floors, reads store names with OCR and matches the unit numbers on the plan to the names in the legend. You finish the map in a visual editor, and it runs on phones, your website and on-site kiosks from one dashboard. Building is free, and our pricing is published on the website, which is still rare in this category.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

BetterMap's answer:

Speed, cost and control. Competitors usually quote five figures per venue and take weeks to deliver a map. With BetterMap, a venue team uploads its existing floor plan, gets an AI-generated draft and publishes the same week. Pricing is public and scales with floor area, so you know the cost before you talk to anyone. After launch, your own team updates the map in real time without waiting on a vendor. Visitors don't need to install an app, because the map works in the browser, on your website and on kiosks.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

BetterMap's answer:

Operations, marketing and facilities teams at large venues where people get lost: shopping centres, university campuses, hospitals, and exhibition and conference organisers. They want visitors to find things without asking staff, and they want a map they can keep up to date themselves. Resellers and agencies that serve these venues are a growing second audience, because they can build maps for their own clients.

What's the story behind your product?

BetterMap's answer:

I started BetterMap after watching people stand in front of a mall directory board, find nothing, and go ask a security guard. The maps already existed, but only on paper or in PDFs nobody could search. The hard part was never drawing the map. It was getting the data out of the drawing: scans, PDF exports with hundreds of thousands of vector paths, and photos of boards that had hung on a wall for decades. I have a background in computer science and machine learning, so most of the work went into a pipeline that reads those files automatically. BetterMap is built in Limassol, Cyprus, and our first maps went live in shopping malls there.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

BetterMap's answer:

Vue.js on the front end with WebGL map rendering, Node.js on the back end, MongoDB, and AWS for hosting. The floor plan pipeline is written in Python and uses computer vision, machine learning models trained on annotated floor plans, and OCR for store names and legends.
