  • Compression
Rsync supports compression of data during transfer, which can further reduce the amount of data sent over the network.
  • Secure Transfer
Rsync can utilize SSH for secure data transfer, adding a layer of encryption to protect data as it moves between systems.
  • Versatile
Rsync can be used for a variety of tasks such as backups, mirroring, and synchronization, making it a versatile tool for different data management needs.
  • Preserves File Attributes
Rsync preserves file permissions, timestamps, ownerships, and symbolic links during the transfer, ensuring that all file attributes remain intact.
  • Widely Supported
Rsync is available on most Unix-like operating systems and there are ports available for Windows, making it accessible across different platforms.
  • Open Source
Rsync is free and open-source software, allowing anyone to use, modify, and distribute it without licensing fees.

Possible disadvantages

  • Complex Syntax
The rsync command line options can be complex and difficult to master, especially for users who are not familiar with command-line interfaces.
  • Initial Setup
Setting up rsync for the first time can be cumbersome, particularly when dealing with SSH keys, excluding files, and setting up cron jobs for automation.
  • Resource Intensive
During large data transfers, rsync can be resource-intensive, consuming a considerable amount of CPU and RAM, which might affect system performance.
  • Limited Incremental Backup Support
Rsync's incremental backup feature is somewhat limited and less sophisticated compared to dedicated backup solutions, requiring additional scripting for effective implementation.
  • Remote File System Compatibility
Rsync may encounter issues with certain remote file systems that have different characteristics or limitations, such as differing maximum file path lengths or unsupported special characters.
  • No Native GUI
Rsync does not have a native graphical user interface (GUI), which may make it less accessible to users who prefer or require a visual interaction.
  • No Built-in Scheduling
Rsync lacks built-in scheduling capabilities, necessitating the use of external tools like cron (Linux/Unix) or Task Scheduler (Windows) to automate scheduled tasks.
  • Privacy-first
Runs entirely on the Mac inside the macOS sandbox. No account, no tracking, no data ever leaves the device. Files are only read, never modified or transmitted.
  • Folder structure always visible
Unlike flat-list duplicate finders, the full folder hierarchy stays visible at every step, so the location of each copy is always clear before any removal decision.
  • Smart recommendation engine
Each copy is scored on filename quality, modification date, folder depth, and name length. The recommended copy is highlighted automatically, and the weights of each criterion are adjustable in Preferences.
  • Mark → Review → Trash workflow
Files are never deleted immediately. Candidates are marked, reviewed in a dedicated screen, and only then moved to the Trash. Visual warnings appear before all copies of a file can be removed.
  • User-Friendly Interface
Duplicate Wizard offers an intuitive and easy-to-navigate interface, making it accessible for users of all technical levels.
  • Customizable Search Criteria
Allows users to set specific parameters for identifying duplicates, enhancing search precision and customizing results to fit specific needs.
  • Support for Multiple File Types
The tool can handle a wide variety of file types, ensuring comprehensive cleaning across different file formats.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing rsync and Duplicate Wizard.

What's the story behind your product?

Duplicate Wizard's answer:

Duplicate Wizard started as a personal need: finding duplicate files across a few hard drives. Finder offered no intuitive visual way to track them across folders and backups, and the dedicated duplicate finders on the market all had the same problem: a flat list of filenames. When duplicates are scattered across nested folders and old backups, it is hard to understand where files actually live, and deleting anything starts to feel like guessing. Pricing was another frustration. Most of those apps were sold as subscriptions, even though duplicate cleanup is rarely a regular activity. For most people it happens once or twice a year, when they reorganize a hard drive, free up space, or migrate to a new Mac. A monthly subscription felt wrong for a tool used that rarely. That frustration led to building a native macOS app where the folder structure stays visible while reviewing duplicates, not just as a path label next to each file, but as an interactive folder tree you can browse and expand. Every copy is shown in its real location before any decision is made. The pricing model followed the same principle: a one-time purchase, since that matches how the app is actually used. A configurable scoring engine was added later, suggesting which copy to keep based on name quality, modification date, and path depth, so groups can be resolved quickly without giving up control.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Duplicate Wizard's answer:

Duplicate Wizard is a native macOS app built with Swift and SwiftUI. It uses Apple frameworks for file system access, Quick Look previews, and the macOS sandbox. Content matching is done with SHA256 hashing on strategic portions of each file. In-app purchases are handled through StoreKit and distributed via the Mac App Store.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Duplicate Wizard's answer:

Three reasons stand out:

  • Folder context. Every copy is shown in its real location, not as an isolated entry in a list. You always know what you are about to delete.

  • Safety first. Marked files go through a review step and are moved to the Trash, never permanently deleted. Visual warnings appear if you are about to remove every copy of a file, and anything can be restored in one click during the session.

  • Honest pricing. One-time in-app purchase, no subscription, fully offline, no tracking, no account required.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Duplicate Wizard's answer:

Mac users who want to free up disk space without taking risks.

Typical users include photographers cleaning up libraries after imports, people consolidating data from old drives or backups, and anyone whose Downloads folder has grown out of control.

The guided workflow is designed for non-technical users, while power users get configurable scoring, custom file extension filters, and bulk marking when they need them.

What makes your product unique?

Duplicate Wizard's answer:

Most duplicate finders give you a flat list of files and ask you to figure out which copy to delete.

Duplicate Wizard keeps the full folder structure visible the whole time, so you always know exactly where each copy lives before deciding what to remove.

A configurable scoring engine ranks copies by name, date, and path depth and recommends which one to keep, but you stay in control of every decision.
