Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Random Wheel Spin and Cert Decoder.

What's the story behind your product?

Random Wheel Spin's answer

I saw my three young children trying to pick names using bits of paper. I decided to make a simple online solution to solve this. Half way through the development of the wheel I also found the wheel prototype had a calming effect on one of my daughters who has autism. She was extremely stressed and anxious one morning before school and I showed her the new wheel I was working on and it was like night and day - she immediately forgot her stresses and focused in on the wheel, spinning it over and over. She enjoyed the vocal speaking out loud of the selected results. Especially when she typed in our four cat names, adding funny words to describe one of our "larger" cats who she adores. She also really liked the shark facts wheel I created as she is very interested in sharks and it is a strong special interest of hers.

Cert Decoder's answer:

I built certdecoder.com over the weekend for my own needs. Sometimes in my work, I need to verify and check certificate details.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Random Wheel Spin's answer

All client-side code, with a small amount of PHP for some of the functionality and security.

Cert Decoder's answer:

certdecoder.com was built using just JavaScript and HTML—simple, fast, and with all processing happening locally in your browser, so no certificate data is sent to any server

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Random Wheel Spin's answer

Teachers, students, parents home schooling, friends and family creating customized games with the wheel, companies creating interactive team-building presentations at work.

Cert Decoder's answer:

certdecoder.com is primarily built for developers, sysadmins, cybersecurity enthusiasts, and DevOps engineers.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Random Wheel Spin's answer

The hidden information feature allowing users to save hidden activities, actions, questions or answers behind each wheel entry. The simplicity and ease of use and full customization. There is also no sign-up required for saving or sharing wheels. Everything is completely free to use.

Cert Decoder's answer:

Simple, fast, and reliable. Some similar tools can’t even decode basic certificates. I rigorously tested my tool with many real-world certificates and covered several edge cases where competitors fall short.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

Random Wheel Spin's answer

  • Schools
  • Colleges
  • Parents home schooling
  • Commercial companies for presentations at work
  • Friends and family at home

Cert Decoder's answer:

certdecoder.com is primarily built for developers, sysadmins, cybersecurity enthusiasts, and DevOps engineers.

What makes your product unique?

Random Wheel Spin's answer

Every entry can hold hidden activities, actions, questions, answers, or facts, ready to be revealed after the spin. Even images can be added both to the wheel entry and the hidden section. Most spinners only display a wheel entry. Random Wheel Spin displays the wheel entry but also has the "hidden information" underneath each wheel entry. This makes learning or presentations more engaging and interactive. An example might be a quiz wheel where the wheel entries are the questions but underneath each question will be the hidden information which could be the answer, or more facts about that entry.

Why? Because I built certdecoder.com and couldn’t find a decent place to submit it. So I said screw it — I’ll build my own. With blackjack and hookers. - Source: dev.to / over 1 year ago
