QueryCase is a gamified SQL learning platform built around detective investigations. Instead of boring exercises with fake data, you solve real mystery cases by writing actual SQL against real databases.

Chief Fox gives you a case briefing, you have a database to query, and you have to figure out what happened. The JOIN matters when a suspect has an alibi. The WHERE clause matters when finding who entered a building at 22:13.

54 cases across five detective ranks: Recruit, Rookie, Detective, Senior Detective and Chief Detective. Drills and timed rank exams at each level. A Sandbox mode with real datasets including IMDB movies, Spotify tracks, sports stats and Steam games.

The full Rookie path is completely free. No credit card needed.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing QueryCase and SQLBolt.

What makes your product unique?

QueryCase's answer

QueryCase teaches SQL through detective investigations rather than isolated exercises. Every case has a real briefing, a real database, and a mystery that only SQL can solve - so the concepts stick because the answer actually matters.

Most SQL platforms give you a table called employees and ask you to filter by department. Nobody cares about that data and your brain knows it. QueryCase gives you a suspect, an alibi, and a database full of evidence. The JOIN has a purpose. The WHERE clause has stakes.

Everything runs in the browser via DuckDB WASM - no setup, no installs, results in seconds. The Rookie path is completely free with no credit card required.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

QueryCase's answer

Most SQL learning platforms teach syntax. QueryCase teaches you to think like an analyst.

The detective investigation format means every concept appears in context, you learn subqueries when the case demands them, not because they come next in a syllabus. That contextual learning is why things stick rather than being forgotten within 24 hours.

Practically speaking: QueryCase is free to start with no credit card, runs entirely in the browser with no setup required, and covers SQL from complete beginner through to intermediate and beyond across 54 structured cases with drills and rank exams at every level.

There is also a Sandbox mode with real datasets - IMDB movies, Spotify tracks, sports stats, Steam games - for practising against actual data rather than constructed tables.

If you have tried DataCamp, Codecademy or SQLZoo and found the exercise format hard to stick with, QueryCase is built specifically for that problem.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

QueryCase's answer

QueryCase is built for three types of people:

Career changers who want to break into data analyst roles and need to learn SQL from scratch in a way that actually prepares them for real work, not just tutorial completion certificates.

Students and early-career professionals who have been exposed to SQL through university or bootcamps but found the abstract exercises impossible to retain and want a more engaging way to build genuine fluency.

Self-taught learners who have tried SQL tutorials before, got a few lessons in, and gave up because there was never a reason to care about the answer.

The common thread is people who are motivated to learn SQL but have struggled to make it stick through traditional methods. QueryCase is not built for experienced engineers who already write SQL daily - it is built for the person who keeps starting and stopping and needs the learning to feel like it matters.

What's the story behind your product?

QueryCase's answer

QueryCase started with a frustration I carried for years as a data analyst.

I dropped out of a software engineering degree after realising the coursework had no connection to anything real - Fibonacci sequences, phone book applications, abstract exercises with no stakes. I ended up in a data analyst role instead, which meant learning SQL properly and fast, on the job.

Seven years later I had built data pipelines, done data modelling, enabled self-serve analytics across multiple companies, and I kept seeing the same pattern. People trying to learn SQL hitting the same wall I had. Not because SQL is hard, but because every learning resource follows the same formula: a fake dataset, an isolated exercise, no reason to care about the answer.

The research backs this up. Information you actively generate is retained at nearly three times the rate of passive reading. Tutorials give you nothing to generate because there is nothing at stake.

I wanted to build something where the SQL had a reason behind it. Where getting the query right actually mattered. The detective investigation format came from that - give someone a case briefing, a real database, and a mystery to solve, and suddenly the JOIN has a purpose and the WHERE clause has stakes.

QueryCase is my first product launch. It is built by one person, designed around the learner I used to be, and focused on making SQL feel like something worth learning rather than something to endure.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

QueryCase's answer

Next.js 15 (App Router) โ€” frontend framework and server-side rendering.

Supabase โ€” Postgres database and authentication.

DuckDB WASM โ€” the core technical piece. Every SQL query a user writes executes entirely in the browser with no backend query runner, no round trips, no server infrastructure required. This keeps the product fast and the running costs minimal.

Stripe โ€” one-time payment processing.

Vercel โ€” hosting and deployment.

PostHog โ€” product analytics and event tracking.

Resend โ€” transactional email.

The DuckDB WASM implementation is the most interesting technical decision in the stack. Running a full analytical SQL engine client-side in the browser is not a common pattern but it was the right call for QueryCase โ€” it means zero latency on query execution, no backend to maintain for the SQL layer, and the ability to ship real datasets without worrying about query costs at scale.
