Secure remote access can be facilitated through encrypted tunnels. VPNs, SSH, Cloudflare tunnel, SOCKS, etc. Can all be secure ways of remotely accessing network resources. What you use will vary, depending upon the type of access you require and/or prefer. Pydio Cells (https://pydio.com/) is a great open-source selfhosted file sync and sharing alternative to Nextcloud. It supports, and strongly recommends the use of an S3 compatible storage backend. It actually works better with S3 storage than a normal file system storage.
