Mobile View is a free Chrome extension that overlays a real device frame on top of any live page, so you can see the desktop and mobile (or tablet) layout at the same time, in the same tab. Scrolling, clicks and typing stay in sync between the two views.

It's built for responsive web design work: preview a site across different phones and tablets without leaving the page, take clean device-framed screenshots for clients, portfolios or a GitHub README, and record the screen to show a layout in action.

Everything runs locally in the browser โ€” no servers, no analytics inside the extension, no tracking.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Polypane and MobileView.app.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

MobileView.app's answer:

It's a Chrome extension (Manifest V3) built with vanilla JavaScript, HTML and CSS using the Chrome extension APIs. Screen recording uses the browser's native capture and WebCodecs APIs. The website is a static site.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

MobileView.app's answer:

Web developers, front-end developers and designers who work with responsive layouts every day โ€” plus freelancers showing work to clients, and anyone building a portfolio or GitHub README that needs clean device-framed screenshots.

What makes your product unique?

MobileView.app's answer:

Most tools make you switch between desktop and mobile views. Mobile View shows both at the same time, in the same tab โ€” a real device frame sits on top of the live page, and scrolling, clicks and typing stay in sync between the desktop layout and the device preview. It's a lightweight browser extension rather than a separate app or paid cloud service, and everything runs locally with no tracking.

What's the story behind your product?

MobileView.app's answer:

I'm a full-stack web developer, and I kept hitting the same friction: checking how a site looked on mobile while building the desktop version, and explaining responsive behaviour to clients over a call. Existing options either hid the desktop layout or felt clumsy, so I built the tool I wanted for myself โ€” and turned it into a free extension when other developers kept asking about it.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

MobileView.app's answer:

It's free, installs in one click, and works directly on any live page โ€” no separate app, account, or cloud service. You get desktop and mobile side by side with synced interaction, clean device-framed screenshots, and screen recording for client demos, all locally in your browser with no analytics or tracking.

The point isn't showing what they look like, it's that the result is randomized. Screenshots aren't, so that kind of defeats the purpose. We also need to talk about Source Order vs. Tab Orderโ€”theyโ€™re more different than youโ€™d expect ๐Ÿ‘€. Source Order is the sequence of nxodes inside their parent in the DOM. Tab Order is the sequence of focusable nodes navigated using the Tab key. If a focusable element lacks tabindex, it follows a depth-first traversal of Source Order (visualized conceptually as a traversal path). Want to visualize Source Order?... - Source: dev.to / about 1 year ago

That's pretty cool! Get ready to keep these up to date monthly or become obsolete quickly. One of the downsides of tools like this is that your URL needs to be available online so if there's an issue, your iteration loop is quite long.
