Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Plotiar and Manuskript.

What makes your product unique?

Plotiar's answer

Plotiar is the only writing tool that combines a real A4 page editor with built-in flowcharts, freeform ideaboards, and real-time collaboration in a single workspace. Most writing tools force you to choose — Scrivener gives you organization but no collaboration, Google Docs gives you collaboration but no project structure, and Notion gives you a workspace but treats documents like database entries. Plotiar brings all of these together so writers can plan, draft, and collaborate without switching tools.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Plotiar's answer

If you're tired of scattering your work across multiple apps — your manuscript in Google Docs, your outline in Notion, your character notes in a spreadsheet - Plotiar replaces all of that with one project workspace. You get a proper page-layout editor (what you see is what prints), drag-and-drop flowcharts for plotting, freeform canvases for visual brainstorming, and live collaboration with co-authors and editors. It's web-based with no installation, and the free tier includes up to 5 projects with unlimited documents, so you can try it without commitment.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Plotiar's answer

Plotiar is built for long-form writers who need more than a blank page. That includes novelists organizing multi-chapter manuscripts, screenwriters mapping out plot arcs, academics managing research papers and theses, worldbuilders tracking complex lore and character relationships, and collaborative writing teams who need to work together in real time. If your project is too big for a single document, Plotiar is for you.

What's the story behind your product?

Plotiar's answer

Plotiar started from a simple frustration: every writing tool either did one thing well or tried to do everything poorly. Scrivener was powerful but stuck on desktop with no collaboration. Google Docs was great for sharing but terrible for organizing a novel. Notion was flexible but never felt like a writing tool and other tools were far too expensive. Plotiar was built to be the workspace writers actually need - one that treats documents like real pages, keeps everything organized in one project, and lets you collaborate without compromises.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Plotiar's answer

Plotiar is built with React and TypeScript on the frontend, with a GraphQL API powered by Apollo Server on the backend. The database runs on PostgreSQL with Redis for caching. Real-time collaboration uses Yjs, a conflict-free replicated data type (CRDT) framework. The application is deployed on AWS using Lambda, Amplify, and Aurora. The rich text editor is a custom-built canvas editor designed specifically for page-layout writing.
