I believe the original author of most of this content was Brian Walker, creator of brogue, which uses Dijkstra maps to great effect. In my opinion, brogue is the greatest 'modern' traditional roguelike. To start, I would recommend Brogue or The Ground Gives Way. Both are very simplified and have an accessible, modern approach. Tales of Maj'Eyal, while more complex, also a more modern game feel to it that might be appealing. There are two main types of roguelike gameplay: dungeon delvers, and expansive open worlds.
