Possible disadvantages

  • Smaller Community and Ecosystem
Compared to major hosting providers like DigitalOcean, AWS, or even shared hosts like SiteGround, Opalstack has a smaller user base, which means fewer community tutorials, third-party guides, and forum discussions available for troubleshooting.
  • Limited Scalability Options
Opalstack is primarily a shared hosting provider, which means it may not be the best choice for high-traffic applications or projects that require rapid, on-demand scaling of resources like CPU, RAM, or storage.
  • Not Ideal for Beginners
While developer-friendly, Opalstack's approach can be intimidating for non-technical users. Setting up applications often requires familiarity with the command line and server configuration, which may not suit those looking for simple one-click solutions.
  • Limited Data Center Locations
Opalstack offers a relatively small number of data center locations compared to major cloud providers, which may result in higher latency for users targeting audiences in regions not well-served by the available server locations.
  • Fewer Managed Services and Add-ons
Unlike larger hosting platforms, Opalstack lacks a wide range of managed add-on services such as built-in CDN integration, managed backups with granular restore options, or one-click SSL management that more mainstream providers offer out of the box.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing PixKeep.app and Opalstack.

What makes your product unique?

PixKeep.app's answer

All image processing happens 100% in your browser — files never leave your device, and every tool works offline once loaded. PixKeep also has a built-in visual comparison tool: split / side-by-side / diff views with a pixel-level diff heatmap and a DSSIM score, so you can see exactly what compression or conversion changed before you save.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

PixKeep.app's answer

  • No uploads: conversion happens on your device — no queue, no server-imposed file caps, no privacy risk
  • No account, no sign-up, no watermark — 100% free
  • Works offline once loaded (PWA)
  • Visual quality check: split / side-by-side / diff comparison with DSSIM score before saving
  • Beyond conversion: compress, resize, crop, rotate, flip, compare — plus ready-made scenes and a passport photo maker with 300 DPI print sheets

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

PixKeep.app's answer

iPhone users converting HEIC photos to universal formats, visa and passport applicants preparing compliant photos, social media creators sizing images for Instagram/YouTube/LinkedIn/Discord, and privacy-conscious users who don't want their photos on someone else's server.

What's the story behind your product?

PixKeep.app's answer

PixKeep started as a side project by a developer with 10+ years image/video processing experience. The motivation: popular image converters upload your photos to a server, add queues, watermarks and file limits — while modern browsers can do all of it locally. PixKeep proves a browser-only toolkit can be faster, free, and private by default, with zero server costs keeping it sustainable as a free product.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

PixKeep.app's answer

  • Astro (static site generation) + TypeScript
  • Browser Canvas API and WebCodecs
  • WASM codecs: MozJPEG, WebP, AVIF, OxiPNG
  • heic2any (HEIC), UTIF.js (TIFF), pdf.js + jsPDF (PDF), gif.js (GIF), Cropper.js
  • Service Worker (offline PWA)
  • Hosted on Cloudflare Pages

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

PixKeep.app's answer

  • PixKeep is free and account-free — we don't track users by design
  • Typical users: iPhone owners converting HEIC photos, passport/visa applicants, social media creators, and anyone who prefers not to upload personal photos to a server
