The AI tutor and the live human practice sit in the same app rather than being separate products. You can have a voice conversation with a tutor, get blind-matched with another learner for a call, and review the vocabulary from both in one place. Pronunciation is scored word by word on accuracy, fluency and completeness, so you find out which specific sound you are getting wrong instead of being told you are hard to understand.

Most apps are strong at recognition and weak at production. You can tap the right answer out of four for months and still freeze when someone asks you a question out loud. OwnSlides is built around producing the language and being corrected on it, through spoken practice with both an AI tutor and real people.

Against Duolingo, it does far more with speaking and correction, though Duolingo is better at making you show up daily. Against Anki, the vocabulary system captures words in one tap from wherever you met them rather than needing you to build cards. Against italki, it is cheaper and always available, though a human teacher is still better for real conversation.

Learners who can already read and understand some of their target language but struggle to speak it, roughly A2 to B2. People who have used an app for a while and realised comprehension has outpaced production.

Secondarily, language teachers and tutors who need to produce lesson material and social content quickly, and who want to assign work to their own students and track completion.

It started as a tool for building slide-based educational videos, and the language lessons people made with it turned out to be the part that mattered. The product moved toward language learning from there.

The direction was shaped by a specific frustration: it is easy to build something that tells you whether you picked the right answer, and hard to build something that tells you whether what came out of your mouth was right. Most of the work has gone into the second problem.
