Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing OpusPDF and Smallpdf.

What makes your product unique?

OpusPDF's answer

Most PDF sites upload your file to a server no matter how small the job. OpusPDF decides first. Merging, splitting, reordering, rotating, deleting or extracting pages, cropping, page numbers, image-to-PDF, password protection and quick compression run inside your browser through WebAssembly, so the file never leaves your computer. The page tells you when that happened. Jobs that genuinely need a server — OCR, conversion to Word, Excel or PowerPoint, PDF/A, heavy compression — get uploaded over HTTPS and deleted after processing.

The second thing is range. There are 34 tools, and Pro users can chain several of them into a saved workflow that runs in one pass, so a monthly stack of scanned invoices goes OCR → extract tables → CSV without babysitting each step.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

OpusPDF's answer

Three reasons.

Price: Starter is $3.99/month and Pro is $6.99/month, against the $15–25 that desktop PDF suites charge.

Output you can send to a client: nothing OpusPDF produces carries a watermark, on any tier, including free.

Privacy that isn't a promise: for the browser-side tools listed above, there's no upload to trust us about. The file stays on your device.

Eight tools also work with no account at all. You get merge, split, organize, rotate, delete pages, extract pages, page numbers and the PDF/A validator without handing over an email address first.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

OpusPDF's answer

People who handle documents every day but were never going to buy Acrobat.

Bookkeepers and accountants pulling tables out of scanned bank statements and invoices into Excel or CSV. Freelancers and small agencies sending signed contracts and proposals. Students and researchers merging, splitting and OCR-ing scanned papers. Small legal and admin teams that need redaction, form filling and signatures without routing files through IT.

Underneath that there's a wider group who show up once for a single merge or compression, use a no-signup tool, and leave. We designed for both: the quick job should take fifteen seconds, and the recurring job should be automatable.

What's the story behind your product?

OpusPDF's answer

The options for working with a PDF were bad in two different ways. Desktop suites cost $20 a month and take a day to learn. Free web tools cap you at a couple of files a day, stamp watermarks on the output, and upload everything to a server you know nothing about, even to rotate a page.

The rotating-a-page part is what bothered us most. Browsers have been able to do that work locally for years. So OpusPDF was built around a router that sends a job to your own machine whenever your device can handle it, and only pays for server time on the work that actually needs it — OCR, conversions, compression. Lower costs on our side became lower prices and no watermarks on yours.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

OpusPDF's answer

Frontend: Next.js 15 (App Router) and TypeScript, styled with Tailwind CSS. PDF rendering uses pdf.js; the in-browser processing engine is built on pdf-lib plus a WebAssembly build of qpdf, running in web workers.

Backend: Python 3.11 and FastAPI, with PostgreSQL and SQLAlchemy, and Redis for caching. PDF manipulation uses PyMuPDF, pypdf, Ghostscript and LibreOffice. OCR runs on Tesseract, Google Cloud Vision or PaddleOCR on GPU, picked by the quality of the scan. The AI features (translation, summaries, chat with a document) run on Anthropic's Claude.

Infrastructure: Vercel for the frontend, Google Cloud Run and self-hosted Oracle Cloud ARM servers for the API, Cloudflare R2 for file storage and Cloudflare in front of everything. Billing is Paddle.
