Ttf fonts are kind of sucky on linux. Try more otf fonts. Go to https://fontlibrary.org/ they are all free and open. You can use them on windows as well. Al so make sire anti-aliasing is enabled. And Hinting should be on, mine is the... Source: over 4 years ago
