Features and specs

What each product offers, as listed by its team.

O
Obelisk 5 features
windmill.dev 5 features
  • Deterministic durable execution
Obelisk is a deterministic workflow engine. Workflow progress is persisted and can be replayed after crashes or restarts, so long-running processes recover without custom checkpointing. Retries and timeouts are handled by the engine.
  • WebAssembly sandboxing
Workflows and activities run as WASM components through the WASI Component Model. This isolates them from the host, limits the capabilities they get, and makes the determinism guarantees easier to enforce.
  • Language flexibility via WASM components
Any language that compiles to WASM components can in principle be used, with Rust being the best supported. Components use typed WIT interfaces to define the contracts between workflows and activities.
  • Lightweight and self-hostable
It is a single Rust-based binary that runs without a large distributed cluster. This gives it a simpler operational footprint than heavier orchestrators such as Temporal or Cadence, and makes it easier to try locally.
  • Built-in observability and tooling
It provides tracing support, a CLI, and a web UI for inspecting executions and their event history. This helps with debugging and understanding workflow behavior.

Possible disadvantages

  • Young project with a small community
Obelisk is relatively new and has far fewer users and contributors than Temporal or Airflow. There are fewer community resources, tutorials, third-party integrations, and production case studies.
  • Steep learning curve
Users need to understand WASM components, WIT interfaces, WASI, and deterministic workflow constraints. This is a heavier conceptual burden for teams unfamiliar with the WebAssembly ecosystem.
  • Immature WASM component tooling
The Component Model and WASI ecosystem are still evolving. Language support beyond Rust can be rough, and breaking changes or limitations in toolchains may affect developers.
  • Limited scalability and ecosystem maturity
A lightweight, single-node-oriented architecture with an embedded database may not match the horizontal scalability, high availability, and multi-language SDK maturity of established engines. Large-scale production deployments are less proven.
  • Licensing and adoption risk
As a young project backed by a small team, it carries risks around long-term maintenance, roadmap stability, and enterprise support. Its open-source license terms may also need review for commercial use.
  • User-friendly Interface
Windmill.dev offers a clean and intuitive user interface, making it easy for developers to navigate and manage their workflows efficiently.
  • Automation Capabilities
It provides robust automation features that streamline and simplify repetitive tasks, which improves efficiency and reduces human error.
  • Integration Flexibility
The platform supports a wide range of integrations with popular tools and services, allowing for seamless workflow integration and enhanced productivity.
  • Scalability
Windmill.dev is built to handle the growth in workload and complexity without compromising on performance, making it suitable for both small and large teams.
  • Collaborative Features
The platform includes collaboration tools that enable teams to work together efficiently, supporting features like version control and shared access.

Possible disadvantages

  • Learning Curve
While the interface is user-friendly, new users may face a learning curve in understanding all the features and capabilities of the platform.
  • Cost
For some organizations, the cost of using Windmill.dev may be a concern, especially if they require access to premium features or have a large team.
  • Feature Limitations on Free Tier
The free tier of Windmill.dev might have limitations on certain features and capabilities, which could restrict its usefulness for larger or more complex projects.
  • Dependency on Internet Connection
As a web-based platform, Windmill.dev requires a stable internet connection, which might be a drawback in areas with unreliable connectivity.
