  • Simplifies CSS
Less extends CSS with dynamic behavior like variables, mixins, operations, and functions, making stylesheets more maintainable and less repetitive.
  • Preprocessing
Allows developers to write easier and cleaner code which then gets compiled into standard CSS, facilitating better performance and compatibility.
  • Variables and Mixins
With the ability to use variables and mixins, code becomes modular and reusable, reducing the potential for errors and simplifying updates.
  • Nested Syntax
Supports nested syntax which allows CSS to be structured in a manner that follows the same visual hierarchy, making it easier to read and understand.
  • Compatibility
Compatible with all versions of CSS, making it easier to integrate with existing projects and frameworks without breaking them.

Possible disadvantages

  • Learning Curve
Requires developers to learn new syntax and concepts, which can be a barrier for those who are accustomed to traditional CSS.
  • Compilation Requirement
Code written in Less needs to be compiled to CSS, adding an extra step in the development process.
  • Performance Overhead
While not significant, the preprocessing step can add to development time and require additional configuration and tools.
  • Debugging
Debugging Less can be more challenging compared to plain CSS because source maps need to be set up properly to map the compiled CSS back to the Less files.
  • Dependency
Relies on Node.js or another JavaScript runtime for compiling the Less code, adding another dependency to the project.

Overall verdict

  • Yes, Less is considered a good tool for developers looking to enhance their CSS with additional features that improve code organization and reusability. It's particularly praised for its simplicity and ease of use, making it a solid choice for both new and experienced developers.

Why this product is good

  • Less is a CSS pre-processor that allows for more efficient and manageable styling of web projects. It extends the capabilities of CSS with variables, nested rules, mixins, and functions, making it easier to maintain and scale large stylesheets. Developers can write more concise code, which is then compiled into standard CSS. This makes Less particularly useful for projects that require complex styling structures.

Recommended for

  • Web developers who want more control over their CSS.
  • Projects with large or complex CSS codebases.
  • Teams looking to implement consistent styling patterns.
  • Developers familiar with or transitioning from pure CSS looking for additional functionality.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Modraly and Less.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Modraly's answer

Swift and SwiftUI for the iPhone and iPad app, with an App Clip, WidgetKit Home Screen widgets and StoreKit for subscriptions. Data is stored on-device only. The website is built with Astro.

What makes your product unique?

Modraly's answer

Most alcohol apps are sobriety programmes with a drink log bolted on. Modraly is the opposite: a drink diary for people who still drink. It counts units, spend and calories, shows your weekly total next to the official guideline for your country (UK, France, US, Canada or Australia), and then stays quiet. There are no streaks, badges or sober-day counters, so one drink never wipes out your progress. There is also no account and no Modraly server: your drink history stays on your iPhone or iPad.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Modraly's answer

Choose Modraly if you want to see how much you actually drink without signing up for a programme. Reframe and Sunnyside are coaching products with accounts and yearly subscriptions. I Am Sober and Try Dry are built around staying alcohol-free. MyDrinkaware focuses on UK units and needs an account. Modraly logs a drink in two taps, is free with unlimited logging, and keeps your data on your device. It is the wrong choice if you want coaching, medication support, an Android app, or blood alcohol estimates. None of those are on the roadmap.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Modraly's answer

Adults who drink and want to keep an eye on it: people cutting back rather than quitting, people doing Dry January or Sober October who don't want one slip to reset everything, and anyone curious about how many units, calories or pounds/euros go into their week. It is aimed at iPhone and iPad users in the UK, France, the US, Canada and Australia, and it cares a lot about privacy. It is not a recovery app, and people with alcohol dependence should speak to a doctor.

What's the story behind your product?

Modraly's answer

I'm Quentin, an indie iOS developer in London, and I build Modraly on my own. I kept finding that alcohol apps assumed you wanted to quit: streak counters, sobriety badges, coaching upsells. I wanted something simpler: a quiet diary that tells me the numbers and compares them with the official guideline, without an account and without judging a Friday night. Modraly 1.0 launched on the App Store on 6 September 2026, in English and French.
