  • Steep Learning Curve for Advanced Features
While the basic functionalities are user-friendly, mastering advanced features and custom workflows can be challenging and may require a steep learning curve.
  • Limited Documentation
The available documentation and tutorials are not as comprehensive as some other commercial software, which might make it harder for users to troubleshoot and fully utilize all features.
  • Long Processing Times
Processing large datasets can take a considerable amount of time, as the software requires extensive computational resources to generate high-quality reconstructions.
  • Lack of Support for Non-Standard Cameras
Meshroom performs best with traditional DSLR or mirrorless cameras and may not support non-standard cameras as effectively, limiting its usability in some scenarios.

SimpleX focuses on simplicity, which means it may lack more sophisticated decision analysis features such as sensitivity analysis, probability weighting, or Monte Carlo simulations that more advanced tools offer.
  • Low visibility and community
SimpleX is a relatively niche tool with a small user base, which means limited community support, fewer tutorials, and less peer feedback compared to more established decision-making platforms.
  • Potential oversimplification
For complex decisions involving many interdependent variables, the simplified framework may not adequately capture nuances, dependencies, or non-linear relationships between criteria.
  • Limited collaboration features
The tool may lack robust collaboration capabilities for team-based decision-making, such as real-time co-editing, role-based access, or voting mechanisms for group consensus.
  • No offline functionality
Being a web-based tool, SimpleX requires an internet connection to function, which can be a limitation in situations where connectivity is unreliable or unavailable.

  • Gaussian Point Splatting
    > Could I use GS to render my living room as a digital playground to train my vision models in? Yes, its what the autonomous car people are doing. However you might want to do photogrammetry first (https://github.com/alicevision/meshroom opensource) as that produces a mesh which you can use to detect collisions easier. The downside is that transparent objects render really badly. But it is a lot faster to render. - Source: Hacker News / about 1 month ago

  • I am new to photogrammetry and have a really stupid question I can't find an answer to on Google.
You can input your photos into Meshroom using a capable computer or Colab. Even if you're only interested in some of the depthmaps, you'll have to input a full set of images around the object. It will take 2-4 times longer than default but for your usecase you may want to change the 'Downscale' attribute to 1. Source: over 4 years ago
  • Who knows an app for that?
I know this is r/fossdroid, but I don't think there is any Foss Android application capable of that. However, meshroom came into my mind. It is free and open source with linux support. The downside of it is that you can't create the model right in your phone, but you first need to take many photos to then upload to your computer and process. Source: over 4 years ago
  • 3D modelling just by walking around the object
This has been used in Video games for the Better part of decade, already. And you can do this yourself without an iphone with lidar, by taking a lot of pictures of an object from various angles, and then use something like meshroom to make a detailed 3d model of it. Source: over 4 years ago
