Long answer, you should probably just use regular auth but you could get creative and find other ways to do get around it. For example, when the user purchase the ad removal you send them an email with a customized link that when clicked it sets a cookie on your site that you can check and hide the ads. The PHP website is indeed one of the worst parts of the whole ecosystem. Just look at the landingpage (https://php.net) and compare it with those of other languages. There's not a single piece of PHP code on the page. No "what is PHP", no "why should I use it", and no "that's why PHP is great".
