Features and specs

What each product offers, as listed by its team.

Hologram.io 6 features
Modular JavaScript 5 features
  • Global Coverage
Hologram.io offers global cellular coverage in over 200 countries, ensuring that IoT devices stay connected anywhere in the world.
  • Scalability
The platform supports scaling from small to large deployments effortlessly, making it ideal for both startups and large enterprises.
  • Flexible Data Plans
Hologram.io provides a variety of flexible data plans, allowing users to choose a plan that best suits their usage needs without overspending.
  • Developer-Friendly
The platform offers robust APIs and comprehensive documentation, making it easier for developers to integrate and manage their IoT devices.
  • Real-Time Analytics
Users can access real-time data analytics, enabling them to monitor their IoT devices and make data-driven decisions quickly.
  • Security
Hologram.io includes built-in security features to protect data transmitted over the cellular network, ensuring data integrity and confidentiality.

Possible disadvantages

  • Cost
While Hologram.io offers flexible data plans, the service can become costly for very high data usage, which might not be ideal for all businesses.
  • Network Latency
As with any cellular network service, users may experience network latency, which can be problematic for real-time critical applications.
  • Limited Hardware
The platform supports a limited range of hardware devices, which could restrict choices for specific IoT implementations.
  • Customer Support
Some users have reported that customer support can be slow to respond, which might be a concern for businesses requiring immediate assistance.
  • Complexity for Non-Developers
Although it's developer-friendly, non-developers or those without technical expertise might find the platform complex to navigate and use.
  • Improved Code Organization
Modular JavaScript allows developers to break down code into smaller, manageable modules. This enhances code readability and maintainability by organizing related functionality together.
  • Code Reusability
Modules encourage reusability by allowing the same piece of code to be used across different projects or multiple areas of the same application, reducing redundancy.
  • Scalability
As the application grows, managing code becomes easier with modular JavaScript. Each module can be developed, tested, and maintained independently, making the codebase more scalable.
  • Encapsulation
Modules provide encapsulation, preventing variables and functions from polluting the global namespace. This reduces the risk of naming conflicts and bugs.
  • Improved Testing
With code organized into discrete modules, writing unit tests becomes more straightforward. Each module can be tested individually, leading to more reliable and maintainable tests.

Possible disadvantages

  • Increased Complexity
Introducing modularity can add complexity to the build process, as it often requires module loaders or bundlers (like Webpack or Browserify) to manage dependencies.
  • Overhead
For smaller projects, using a modular approach might be overkill, introducing unnecessary overhead in terms of setup, configuration, and code management.
  • Learning Curve
Developers unfamiliar with modular JavaScript may face a learning curve, especially when dealing with module patterns, loaders, and bundlers.
  • Dependency Management
Relying on multiple modules can lead to complex dependency chains, making it challenging to track and resolve dependencies across different modules.
  • Performance Overhead
Modular JavaScript can introduce performance overhead if not managed properly, such as loading many small modules individually, leading to increased HTTP requests.

  • OVMS and 2023 Niro
OVMS is a not cheap module. It comes with a hologram.io SIM card, but you can use any data-only LTE plan. Cost for the module is over $250, and then you'll have to pay somewhere south of $5/mo for a data plan if you go with hologram.io. Source: over 3 years ago
  • App charge status stuck on 'loading'/'updating' message. any ideas?
An LTE plan from hologram.io is a few bucks a month... And I'd gladly pay it and not give my money to OnStar's broken stuff :-). Source: almost 4 years ago
