HobbyStack features and specs

  • Affordable hosting for hobby projects
HobbyStack is designed specifically for hobby and side projects, offering budget-friendly hosting plans that are more affordable than mainstream cloud providers, making it accessible for developers who want to deploy personal projects without breaking the bank.
  • Simple deployment process
HobbyStack aims to simplify the deployment process, allowing developers to get their hobby projects online quickly without needing deep DevOps knowledge or complex infrastructure configuration.
  • Targeted at side project developers
Unlike general-purpose cloud providers, HobbyStack focuses on the niche of hobby developers and side projects, meaning the platform is tailored to the specific needs and scale of non-commercial or small-scale applications.
  • Low barrier to entry
The platform is designed to be approachable for individual developers and hobbyists, reducing the complexity typically associated with hosting and infrastructure management, making it easy to get started.
  • Cost-effective alternative to major cloud providers
For developers who don't need the full power and scale of AWS, GCP, or Azure, HobbyStack provides a more cost-effective alternative that avoids the surprise billing and complexity of larger platforms.

Possible disadvantages of HobbyStack

  • Limited brand recognition and community
As a relatively niche and lesser-known platform, HobbyStack has a smaller community compared to established providers, which means fewer tutorials, community support resources, and third-party integrations available.
  • Not suitable for production-grade applications
Being focused on hobby projects, HobbyStack may lack the enterprise-grade reliability, SLAs, and scalability features needed for serious production workloads or applications with significant traffic.
  • Limited feature set
Compared to major cloud providers, HobbyStack likely offers a more limited set of services and features, which could be restrictive for projects that grow beyond the hobby stage or require specialized infrastructure components.
  • Uncertain long-term viability
As a smaller, niche hosting platform, there may be concerns about the long-term sustainability and continuity of the service, which could pose risks for projects hosted on the platform if it were to shut down.
  • Limited documentation and support
Smaller platforms typically have less comprehensive documentation and fewer support channels compared to established providers, which could make troubleshooting issues more challenging for users.

Meetup emphasizes local events, making it easier for users to find and participate in activities within their community.
  • Accessibility
The platform is available on both web and mobile applications, providing users with easy access to events and group activities on the go.

  • Event Fees
Some events on Meetup require a fee for participation, which can be a barrier for some users looking for free activities.
  • Organizer Subscription Costs
Group organizers are required to pay a subscription fee to host and manage their groups, which may deter some users from creating new groups.
  • Event Quality Variability

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing HobbyStack and Meetup.

What makes your product unique?

HobbyStack's answer

Most hobby suggestions online are vague listicles or personality-type guesses. HobbyStack scores every hobby across 10 lifestyle dimensions and matches people based on the actual overlap between their lifestyle, personality, and genuine interests. The result is a ranked list with reasoning, not just a generic suggestion.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

HobbyStack's answer

Because it treats hobby discovery as a data problem rather than a content problem. Instead of browsing articles or taking a surface-level quiz, you get a structured match against a database of 180+ activities (and growing) scored on real lifestyle factors like cost, social level, physical intensity, and skill ceiling.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

HobbyStack's answer

People who feel stuck in their free time, have tried hobbies that never stuck, or simply want to discover something genuinely suited to how they're wired. Typically 18 to 35, curious, self-aware, and looking for something meaningful to invest their time in.

What's the story behind your product?

HobbyStack's answer

Built after noticing how many people jump from hobby to hobby spending money on things that never fit them. The problem isn't discipline, it's that most people pick hobbies randomly. HobbyStack was built to fix that with a proper database and matching system.

Top Five EventBrite Alternatives
Moving away from a purely ticketing focus, Meetup is an increasingly popular platform for creating local groups centered on specific interests. However, similar to Eventbrite, Meetup allows users to browse when theyโ€™re looking for something fun to do in their area, making it easier for event hosts to promote their events to the general population no matter the size or...

9 Alternatives to Meetup.com
Eventbrite is a social platform used for hosting and registering for events and is one of the most popular Meetup alternatives. In a few simple steps, you can create an event, set up seating and ticket pricing, and then put the word out using social media to draw a crowd. Users can also register for events, using Eventbriteโ€™s search engine to find events close to them, of a...
A list of Meetup.com alternatives
Meetup.com just announced that they are changing their business model, and will be imposing a $2 fee on attendees for each event. This is presumably a combined consequence of WeWork acquiring Meetup in 2017 and the failed WeWork IPO earlier this year.

  • The Template for Hosting a Successful Tech Meetup
Especially if this is your first meetup, youโ€™ll want to โ€œover-promoteโ€. Itโ€™ll take time to get the message out to all relevant community members. Start promoting at least four weeks out. Share it within your local developer communities via Slack or Discord. Submit it to local tech newsletters, submit it to your cityโ€™s Luma calendar. • A place for things I can't talk to anyone about
I've had success with https://meetup.com/ and https://guild.host/ for finding ; can't offer too much help with scheduling :P I generally check the above sites mid-week, and sign up for things in the coming week. That's been a nice sweet-spot for being able to be early enough before things fill up, while avoiding accidentally having to cancel other things in my life for the meetups. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Unconventional ways to find a software engineering job
If you live in a larger city, itโ€™s likely that there are events or meetups nearby. I recommend using meetup.com or checking local event websites for tech-related meetups. Although you may be looking for a job, itโ€™s better to focus on making real connections here. Going to events and asking everyone you meet if theyโ€™re hiring isnโ€™t a great way to go about it. To form connections, Iโ€™d recommend picking 1-2 regular... - Source: dev.to / almost 2 years ago

It is a pain to find a proper badminton community here in Budapest. In other cities, all you needed to do is search up on google and then you are immediately greeted by a bunch of badminton-loving people online.
