    I've found the most success with learning words in some sort of flashcard format based on frequency lists (meaning learning the most frequently used words first), and then solidifying that learning by reading Chinese text in graded readers.     I was in the same place a few months ago. The thing that's helped me a lot is reading online, so that it's easy to look words up.
