Possible disadvantages

  • Performance Limitations
The engine may struggle with performance issues for more complex games, especially those with high-end graphics and intensive computations.
  • Limited Advanced Features
While suitable for 2D game development, GDevelop lacks advanced features found in other engines, potentially limiting more experienced developers.
  • Learning Curve for Advanced Usage
Although easy for beginners, mastering the platform for more complex projects can have a steep learning curve.
  • Limited Integration
Integration with third-party tools and services is not as extensive as in some other, more established game development engines.
  • Project Collaboration
Collaborative features are relatively basic, potentially making it less ideal for larger, team-based projects.
  • 2D Only
GDevelop focuses exclusively on 2D game development, which can be a downside for those looking to develop 3D games.

  • Lightweight and modern stack
Using modern web development practices and frameworks can result in a lightweight engine that's easier to integrate with other web tools and libraries familiar to JavaScript developers.
  • Free to use
As an open-source project, RouteVN can typically be used without licensing fees, lowering the barrier to entry for indie developers and hobbyists creating visual novels.
  • Easy deployment on the web
Since it's designed for web environments, games built with RouteVN can be easily hosted and shared online, making distribution straightforward compared to engines requiring installers.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing GDevelop and RouteVN.

What makes your product unique?

RouteVN's answer:

RouteVN is a dedicated platform built specifically for Visual Novels, not a general-purpose game engine. Its core product, RouteVN Creator, lets anyone make a Visual Novel with zero coding, is free, open source (MIT), works fully offline, and offers a real-time live preview editor, you see accurate changes as you write. It also includes VN-specialized tools like a Scene Map for branching stories and a fully customizable Layout Editor.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

RouteVN's answer:

  • No coding or technical skills required, unlike script-based engines (which are powerful but have a steep learning curve).
  • Unlike simple UI editors that push you back into scripting for advanced use cases, RouteVN hides technical complexity behind clear interfaces while still supporting advanced features.
  • Free, open source, and offline — your project data lives on your own file system, not in the cloud.
  • Purpose-built for Visual Novels: choices/branching, layouts, assets, publishing, and web export are first-class features.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

RouteVN's answer:

RouteVN Creator is free, so it has creators rather than traditional customers. The most notable projects made with it: - DiaLune by sqewree - Two Straws by BunniBambii

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

RouteVN's answer:

Writers and artists or anyone with a story to tell, who want to create Visual Novels but lack programming skills. It targets both beginners who want to start immediately and serious creators/teams working on professional-quality productions.

What's the story behind your product?

RouteVN's answer:

Around 2024, founder han4wluc set out to build a Visual Novel engine as a meaningful project. Through iteration, it grew from a simple engine into a broader vision: fulfilling the full potential of Visual Novels by fixing creation barriers (no-code tools, collaboration), distribution limitations, and reading experiences. The team built its own foundation: Route Graphics, Route Engine, and RouteVN Creator driven by the belief that Visual Novels, like books and film, are a powerful storytelling medium that brings people together.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

RouteVN's answer:

  • Route Graphics: a declarative graphics and audio library built on PixiJS (WebGPU/WebGL/canvas renderers) and the WebAudio API.
  • Route Engine: a Visual Novel engine built on Route Graphics.
  • Tauri: cross-platform desktop shell (chosen over Electron for its lower memory footprint).
  • insieme: a custom CRDT-style offline-first collaboration library.
  • Rettangoli: an in-house frontend framework.
  • SQLite for project/config storage; exports to a portable web bundle (index.html, main.js, package.bin). The website itself is built with rtgl and Bun.
