FLIF features and specs

  • Lossless Compression
FLIF stands for Free Lossless Image Format, and it is designed to provide lossless compression, meaning the image quality remains completely intact without any data loss.
  • High Compression Ratio
FLIF typically offers better compression ratios compared to other lossless formats like PNG, making the files smaller while retaining quality.
  • Progressive Loading
FLIF supports progressive rendering, allowing images to be displayed gradually as they are being downloaded, improving user experience by showing previews quickly.
  • Compatibility with Animated Images
FLIF supports animated images, similar to GIFs, but with better compression efficiency and quality retention.
  • Versatile Format
FLIF is designed to efficiently compress all kinds of images, including photographs, line art, and animations, offering versatility in its use cases.

Possible disadvantages of FLIF

  • Limited Adoption and Support
As a relatively newer image format, FLIF hasn't been widely adopted and is not natively supported by many browsers or image editing tools.
  • Processing Speed
Compared to more established formats like JPEG and PNG, FLIF can be slower to encode and decode due to its complex compression algorithms.
  • Lack of Hardware Acceleration
FLIF currently lacks hardware acceleration support, which can be a disadvantage when working with high-resolution images on devices with limited processing power.
  • File Size for Simple Images
For simple images or graphics with few colors, FLIF might not provide significant advantages in compression over other formats like PNG, potentially resulting in larger file sizes.

  • Community and Interaction
Medium encourages reader engagement through comments, claps, and highlights, fostering a sense of community among writers and readers.

Possible disadvantages of Medium

  • Monetization
While Medium has a Partner Program, it may not be as lucrative as other methods of monetization available on independent blogging platforms.
  • Control and Customization
Medium offers limited customization options compared to dedicated blog platforms like WordPress, restricting how you can brand and personalize your blog.
  • Content Ownership
By publishing on Medium, you agree to their terms and conditions, which may include giving up some control over how your content is used and distributed.
  • Paywall Issues
Some articles are placed behind a paywall, which might limit the reach of your content if you want it to be freely accessible to everyone.
  • Dependency on Platform
Relying solely on Medium means that any changes to the platform's policies or algorithms can directly impact your reach and engagement.

FLIF mentions (10)

  • Consider using Zstandard and/or LZ4 instead of Deflate
It is possible to polyfill an image format, this was done with FLIFยนยฒ. Not that it mean FLIF got the traction required to be used much anywhere outside its own demosโ€ฆ It is also possible to detect support and provide different formats (so those supporting a new format get the benefit of small data transfer or other features) though this doesn't happen as it isn't usually an issue enough to warrant the extra... - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago

  • Google Chrome Is Already Preparing To Deprecate JPEG-XL (~3x smaller than JPEG, HDR, lossless, alpha, progressive, recompression, animations)
As for lossless image compression, FLIF is based off of a deriviative of CABAC (used by H264) called MANIAC (which I couldn't find any information for). As mentioned on the website in general it outperforms PNG at around 33% smaller files. Interestingly enough, FLIF is a predecessor to JPEG-XL which is what this post is talking about. • Google Chrome Is Already Preparing To Deprecate JPEG-XL
I'm a huge fan of AV1 for video, but for images JPEG-XL is simply the better codec than AVIF. If you've not actually looked closely at a comparison and are just on the side of AVIF in this debate because it's based on AV1 (and maybe you hate HEVC / HEIC), I'd urge you to look closer. Jpeg XL is pretty unrelated to Jpeg, Jpeg 2000 and Jpeg XR and instead a successor of Google Guetzli, FLIF and newer research. Source: almost 4 years ago
  • Pain in the ass
Legally they had no choice because jpeg xl is based on flif.info and https://github.com/google/pik but the flif has LGPL license which should open source the rest.. However regardless the media group didn't really do much other than write some standard and slap their name on it. Wasn't their work. Source: almost 4 years ago
