Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing FileTools.site and ToolKnit.

What makes your product unique?

ToolKnit's answer:

ToolKnit runs every tool 100% inside the user's browser. Files never get uploaded to a server, which means no privacy risk, no waiting on uploads, and no file size caps tied to a server plan. It bundles 35+ tools — PDF, image, video, audio, text, time, and creative utilities — into one consistent UI, all completely free, with no signup, no login, and no daily account limits.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

ToolKnit's answer:

Most online tool sites either upload your files to a server (slow + privacy risk), lock features behind a paywall, or force you to create an account. ToolKnit does none of those. Everything runs locally in the browser using WebAssembly, Canvas, and the Web Audio API, so it stays fast even on large files, works offline after the first load, and never asks for an email. Users get a single clean toolbox instead of 30 different sketchy single-purpose sites.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

ToolKnit's answer:

ToolKnit is built for everyday digital workers who occasionally need a quick file or text utility — students compressing a PDF before submission, designers resizing images for social, marketers extracting audio from a video, gamers checking their keyboard or click speed, and developers grabbing text out of a document. The common thread is people who want a job done in under a minute, on any device, without installing software or signing up.

What's the story behind your product?

ToolKnit's answer:

ToolKnit started from a simple frustration: needing a small thing done — compress a PDF, convert a WebP, count characters in an essay — and ending up on a different ad-heavy, signup-walled site every time, often with files getting uploaded to unknown servers. The goal was to build one fast, clean, privacy-first place that does all of those small jobs in the browser, with no accounts, no uploads, and no premium tier. Every tool added since has followed the same rule: if it can't run client-side, it doesn't ship.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

ToolKnit's answer:

  • HTML, CSS (TailwindCSS), and vanilla JavaScript on the front end
  • WebAssembly (FFmpeg.wasm) for video and audio processing
  • PDF.js and pdf-lib for PDF rendering, merging, splitting, and compression
  • HTML Canvas API for image conversion, cropping, resizing, and pixel art
  • Web Audio API for audio extraction and conversion
  • Service Worker for offline support and asset caching
  • IndexedDB / localStorage for client-side state and personal bests

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

ToolKnit's answer:

ToolKnit is a free, no-signup product, so it doesn't track users by company or maintain a customer list. Usage comes mainly from individual users worldwide — students, freelancers, content creators, gamers, and small teams — who use the site directly in the browser without any account.
