Hi! There is no way to filter emails from your contact list on Gmail. i.e., if A, B, & C are in your contact list and X, Y, or Z are not, you have no way to tell Gmail, do something for any email that comes from X, Y, Z, or specifically to A, B, C
Emailgurus does that for you: It catches emails from outsiders and labels them as outsiders. You can choose the option to hide them from your inbox and archive them to check them later from the Outsiders label. Or just label them and keep them in your inbox until you feel comfortable that you're not going to miss important ones.
