EJS
Eloquent JavaScript 5 features
Bewary 8 features
  • Comprehensive Learning Resource
Eloquent JavaScript covers a wide range of topics, from basic syntax to advanced concepts like asynchronous programming and web development. This depth makes it a valuable resource for both beginners and advanced programmers.
  • Interactive Code Examples
The book contains numerous interactive code examples that allow readers to see the effects of their code in real-time. This hands-on approach reinforces learning and helps solidify concepts.
  • Free Online Access
Eloquent JavaScript is available for free online, making it accessible to anyone with an internet connection. This allows learners from around the world to benefit from its content without financial barriers.
  • Engaging Writing Style
The author, Marijn Haverbeke, writes in an engaging and clear style, making complex topics more understandable and keeping readers interested.
  • Good Balance of Theory and Practice
The book strikes a good balance between theoretical explanations and practical exercises, allowing readers to apply what they have learned immediately.

Possible disadvantages

  • Steep Learning Curve
Some readers may find the book's progression to be rapid, especially if they are complete beginners. The book quickly moves from basic to more complex topics, which can be overwhelming.
  • Lacks Visual Aids
While the text is clear and the code examples are helpful, the book could benefit from more visual aids like diagrams and illustrations to explain complex concepts.
  • Assumes Some Prior Knowledge
Although it's aimed at beginners, the book sometimes assumes that readers have some prior programming experience, which can make it less accessible to absolute novices.
  • Limited Coverage of Latest ES Features
The book may not cover some of the latest features and best practices introduced in newer versions of JavaScript (e.g., ES2019 and beyond), meaning readers might need to supplement their learning with additional resources.
  • Web Development Sections Could Be More Detailed
While the book does touch on web development, the sections on this topic are not as in-depth as some readers might hope. Those looking to get a more thorough grounding in web development may need to consult other sources.
  • Photo scam check
Photograph a real situation, a street con or a fake charity clipboard, and get a verdict on the scene itself.
  • Text, link and QR checks
Paste a suspicious text, link, email, phone number or QR code and get scam, suspicious or safe with one plain reason.
  • Screenshot checks
Upload a screenshot of a message or listing and Bewary reads it and judges it.
  • Scam text filtering
On iPhone, scam texts from unknown numbers are filed into junk automatically.
  • Scam call labels
Community-reported scam numbers get a warning label when they ring. Label only, Bewary never blocks or answers a call.
  • Data breach monitoring
Alerts you when your email address or phone number turns up in a known data breach.
  • Family protection
Add parents, kids or anyone you look out for and see who may need a hand on one timeline.
  • Recovery plan
Already clicked, called or paid? Get a calm step by step plan: who to contact, what to change, how to report it.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Eloquent JavaScript and Bewary.

What makes your product unique?

Bewary's answer:

Most scam checkers stop at text and links. Bewary answers "is this a scam" about the world in front of you: photograph a street shell game, a fake-charity clipboard, or a QR sticker slapped on a parking meter, and you get a verdict on the scene, not only on a URL.

Everything runs through one engine:

  • Paste a message, link, email, screenshot, or run a scammer phone number lookup and get Scam, Suspicious, or Safe in seconds
  • One plain-language reason with every verdict, so you learn the tell instead of trusting a score
  • Exact next steps, including a recovery plan if you already clicked, called, or paid
  • Scam texts from unknown numbers filtered to junk, and known scam callers labelled before you answer

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

Bewary's answer:

Bewary is a direct-to-consumer product, so there is no logo wall to show here, and inventing one would be its own small scam.

The customers are individuals: the person who just got a text claiming to be from their bank, someone running a website legit check before typing in card details, someone who added an ageing parent to the Family tab. Both ways to buy are self-serve:

  • Bewary Protect on iPhone, $4.99 a month or $39.99 a year
  • Bewary Web, $19.99 a year, for checks in any browser

There are no enterprise contracts, resellers, or named partners to report.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Bewary's answer:

Those are good tools covering different slices. ScamAdviser answers is this website legit from domain and site reputation. Norton Genie is a scam checker for messages and screenshots. BitDefender is a full security suite for your devices.

Bewary is built around the moment of doubt, wherever it happens:

  • Point the camera at a real situation. A street con, a clipboard fundraiser, a payment QR code taped over the real one. You get a verdict on the scene, not just on text you can copy.
  • One plain reason, every time. Ordinary words, so you know why.
  • A plan for after. Already paid? You get a step-by-step recovery plan: who to call, what to change, how to report it.
  • Family and leaks. Add the people you look out for, and watch email and phone numbers for known breaches.

What's the story behind your product?

Bewary's answer:

Bewary is made by Reply200 Inc. It came out of a gap in the help people actually get. Ask "is this a scam" and the answers on offer are mostly written for people who already understand phishing, and they tend to arrive after the reply has been sent.

So the app was built around three moments instead:

  • Before. One question, any input, a verdict in seconds with one plain reason.
  • In the room. Scams are not only text on a screen, so you can photograph what is in front of you and get a verdict on that.
  • After. If you already clicked, called, or paid, you get a step-by-step recovery plan rather than sympathy.

Andrey Khayrullaev founded it and stays accountable for the scam library's accuracy and corrections.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Bewary's answer:

Ordinary people at the moment they think is this a scam, not security professionals.

  • Anyone with a phone. Fake delivery texts, bank warnings, prize messages, unknown numbers. They want a phone number scam check or a link checked in seconds, in plain English.
  • Adult children protecting parents. The Family tab lets you add the people you look out for and see who may need a hand. Shared protection, not surveillance, and no location tracking.
  • People deciding whether to reply. The email scam checker reads what the message is actually asking for, not just who it claims to be from.
  • People who already clicked, called, or paid. They need a calm order of operations, fast.

Free to start on iPhone and in any browser.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Bewary's answer:

  • iPhone app: native SwiftUI, plus three system extensions. A Message Filter sends scam texts from unknown senders to junk, a Call Directory labels known scam numbers, and a Share extension checks anything from another app.
  • On device: screenshot text recognition and QR or barcode decoding run on the phone before a check is sent.
  • Web: bewary.app is a static Astro build, with Cloudflare Turnstile for bot protection. The browser check calls the same engine as the app.
  • Backend: Python and FastAPI in Docker, with PostgreSQL and Redis.
  • Detection: a multi-stage pipeline on Google Gemini that reads the input, categorises it, weighs live threat feeds and public sources, then verifies before raising a verdict.
  • Payments: StoreKit 2 on iOS, Stripe on the web.

Clients hold no vendor keys. Every model call and lookup runs server side.
