The title undersells the change a bit in my opinion. By default, mastodon now encourages new users to sign-up on https://mastodon.social which has caused a bit of a kerfuffle in the fediverse. We currently have the Matrix protocol, with client applications such as Element supporting it. We also have XMPP as another option. Generally more modern than IRC, these platforms are primarily developed as FOSS software. This makes it less likely for developers to impact their users negatively. You can get several free acccess interactions with a version here ControlNet Scribble (ie if you keep using it for long enough/ several tries then it will ask you to set up an account) ...... This is the backend for a simpler browser interface at Scribble Diffusion but the ControlNet one above allows you to upload an image, so, yeah draw a scribble on a piece of paper, take a photo with your phone and then upload.
