Couchers.org is a non-profit and free platform, built by volunteers and responsible to the couch surfing community, instead of investors. Our goal is to reclaim couch surfing and make it easy and safe for people to connect across cultures, keeping the free-sharing spirit alive and all the amazing travel experiences accessible to everyone. For this we’re including some of the best features from other platforms but tackling the main issues such as: profit incentives, safety, disconnect from community needs, or outdated functionality.

NodeBB is a next-generation discussion platform that utilizes web sockets for instant interactions and real-time notifications. NodeBB forums have many modern features out of the box such as social network integration and streaming discussions. NodeBB is an open source project which can be forked on GitHub.
I was lucky enough to stumble on NodeBB in the early days right as we were transitioning a large user base from another forum and needed a platform that could handle the volume and speed of interactions that our users demanded. We took a big risk on NodeBB in 2014 when it was brand new and it has paid off in spades over the years. For seven years our users have consistently raved about ease of use and performance of the platform while on the back end we have been thrilled with the ease of management and low resource needs of hosting even for a site hitting hundreds of millions of hits per month. It is modern, regularly updated, has a great community and team behind it. We've always gotten lots of support and know that we made the right choice and continue to choose NodeBB as our forum of choice.

Yep, it's an issue with couchsurfing, nobody wants to leave a negative reference. This was actively being discussed in couchers.org. I myself felt pretty uncomfortable leaving a neutral reference once. Source: about 3 years ago
You could also use couchers.org. It's more a follow-up to the broken couchsurfing.com, so a much wider scope. Currently it's free and says it will stay that way, they want to go with volunteer effort. Source: over 3 years ago
Couchsurfing: my preferred way of touring: you get to meet great and likeminded people, you don't have to lug around camping gear (although it's good to bring an indoor-sleeping bag). The site with name couchsurfing.com is broken. But the oldschool warmshowers.org and the new couchers.org are great! You have to treat this type of hospitality as a gift and not consider it a free service. If you can, hosting others... Source: over 3 years ago
