Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Codecademy and mdedit.io.

What makes your product unique?

mdedit.io's answer:

mdedit.io combines a distraction-free Markdown editor with professional document production in a single browser app — no account, no install. It is the only open-source browser editor that offers outline navigation for long documents, print-ready PDF export via Paged.js, DOCX export, BibTeX/CSL citations, Mermaid diagrams, KaTeX math, and optional AI assistance together in one tool. Everything runs in the browser and can be fully self-hosted.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

mdedit.io's answer:

Most Markdown editors are built for quick notes. mdedit.io is built for serious documents: thesis drafts, technical specifications, reports, academic papers. Unlike Typora or Obsidian it runs entirely in the browser with no installation. Unlike StackEdit or Dillinger it produces print-ready PDF output with proper page layout, headers, footers and page numbers. Unlike Notion or Google Docs it requires no account and can be self-hosted under an open-source license (Apache 2.0).

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

mdedit.io's answer:

Students and academic authors writing thesis papers, seminar papers or research articles who want an alternative to LaTeX without giving up document quality. Secondary audiences are developers and technical writers who produce specs, ADRs or reports in Markdown, and privacy-conscious teams or organisations that self-host their own document tooling.

What's the story behind your product?

mdedit.io's answer:

mdedit.io was built out of frustration with the gap between note-taking Markdown editors and full document production tools. LaTeX produces great output but has a steep learning curve. Word struggles with long structured texts. Browser-based Markdown editors export basic HTML at best. The goal was a tool that feels as simple as a text editor but produces output as clean as a typeset document — directly in the browser, without an account, self-hostable for anyone who needs full control over their data.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

mdedit.io's answer:

Node.js, Fastify, CodeMirror 6, markdown-it, Paged.js, Mermaid, KaTeX, better-sqlite3, Docker. Runs entirely in the browser on the client side for editing and preview; server handles persistence, collaboration and PDF rendering.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

mdedit.io's answer:

  • mdedit.io is currently in public beta with individual users
