I use ClrMamePro to do the audit, and dat files from Progetto Snaps, which are kept up to dates on a regular basis. You can also download any updates/new files from there as well. Awesome resource. Source: over 3 years ago

I've seen some few super neurotic folks that download non-merged* sets and pick them apart, but most people just d/l the full set and a program like clrmamepro to trim the bulk of the roms off, since it changes so often that it's not worth cherry-picking them by hand.
