I started with NASA's "CGI Moon Kit" [1] to do my little voxel-based moon game, Mooncraft2000. Higher-resolution data would have been cool – but at some point the enormity of the data would probably mean I would have to stick to a small area of the Moon lest I fill my little server with tiles, ha ha. https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4720. - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago
Some more information, I am using a sun lightsource in the roughly 30m away. I am using a GAIA DR2 Image for the background of the galactic plane, set on strength 0.1. For the moon I am using the NASA CGI Kit, with the Color plugged into a principled shader, and the displacement image plugged into a displacement node, into the displacement output. And now this tool is used in various fields – including backcountry/outdoors – which... Source: over 3 years ago
It's a bit tricky with high zoom levels because there might be a mountain 5 miles away that's casting shade on your block but at high zoom levels, features far away tend to be ignored for performance reasons. I've been using the map for mountaineering and in my experience it's quite accurate +/-2 to 3 minutes. Do you live in the extreme north or south? Maybe the elevation data for your region is not accurate. The... - Source: Hacker News / almost 4 years ago
