I started with NASA's "CGI Moon Kit" [1] to do my little voxel-based moon game, Mooncraft2000. Higher-resolution data would have been cool โ but at some point the enormity of the data would probably mean I would have to stick to a small area of the Moon lest I fill my little server with tiles, ha ha. https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4720. - Source: Hacker News / about 2 years ago
Some more information, I am using a sun lightsource in the roughly 30m away. I am using a GAIA DR2 Image for the background of the galactic plane, set on strength 0.1. For the moon I am using the NASA CGI Kit, with the Color plugged into a principled shader, and the displacement image plugged into a displacement node, into the displacement output. A simple RBD explosion sim in Houdini I made about a week ago. The moon is actually just a deformed sphere with a moon displacement texture: https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4720. Source: over 5 years ago
Https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4720 Nasa has a high-res displacement map of the moon you could build off from, and colour map if you want it. Source: over 5 years ago
NASA has actual color and displacement maps available for free here https://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/4720. Source: over 5 years ago
