Simple time-off management for small and remote teams

CalaHQ helps small and growing businesses manage employee leave without relying on spreadsheets, email threads or a large HR platform.

Employees can quickly request vacation, sick leave and other types of time off. Managers can review and approve requests in one place, while the shared team calendar gives everyone a clear view of who is away and when.

What you can manage

  • Time-off requests and approvals
  • Employee leave balances
  • Custom leave types
  • Fixed, accrued and unlimited leave policies
  • Pro-rated allowances for new employees
  • Carry-over rules
  • Public holiday calendars by country
  • Upcoming leave and team availability

CalaHQ is particularly useful for remote and international teams. Each employee can follow the public holiday calendar for their own location, while the company keeps a consistent leave policy across the whole team.

The product is designed to be straightforward for both employees and managers. Setup is quick, everyday actions take only a few clicks, and there are no unnecessary HR features getting in the way.

CalaHQ is a good fit for founders, operations managers, office managers and People teams that need a proper leave management system without the cost or complexity of a full HR suite.

Free for teams of up to 5 users, with all core features included.

Cala HQ features and specs

  • Product Development Platform
Cala provides an all-in-one platform for creators and brands to design, develop, and manufacture physical products, streamlining what is typically a fragmented process.
  • Manufacturing Network Access
Cala connects users with a vetted network of manufacturers and factories, reducing the time and effort needed to find reliable production partners.
  • End-to-End Support
The platform offers support throughout the entire product lifecycle, from initial design and sampling to production and fulfillment, which is valuable for creators without manufacturing experience.
  • Community and Resources
Cala has built a community of creators and entrepreneurs, along with educational resources that help users navigate the complexities of launching a physical product line.
  • Reduced Barrier to Entry
By simplifying the manufacturing process, Cala lowers the barrier for individuals and small businesses to launch their own product lines without needing deep industry connections or expertise.

s3-lambda features and specs

  • Batch processing of S3 objects
s3-lambda provides a straightforward way to perform batch operations on large numbers of S3 objects, enabling map, filter, and reduce-style processing over entire S3 buckets or prefixes without writing boilerplate code.
  • Familiar functional API
The library uses a functional programming paradigm with operations like map, filter, and reduce, making it intuitive for JavaScript developers to process S3 objects using patterns they already know.
  • Built-in concurrency control
s3-lambda handles parallel processing of S3 objects with configurable concurrency, allowing users to control how many operations run simultaneously and avoid overwhelming AWS resources or hitting rate limits.
  • Context-aware operations
The library provides a context object within each operation that includes useful metadata about the current object being processed, simplifying access to S3 object properties during transformations.
  • Easy integration with Lambda
Designed to work seamlessly within AWS Lambda functions, making it straightforward to set up event-driven, serverless pipelines for processing large volumes of S3 data without managing infrastructure.

Possible disadvantages of s3-lambda

  • Unmaintained project
The repository appears to be no longer actively maintained, with limited recent commits and unresolved issues, which raises concerns about long-term reliability, security patches, and compatibility with newer AWS SDK versions.
  • Limited documentation
The project's documentation is relatively sparse, lacking comprehensive examples, edge case handling guidance, and detailed API references, which can make it challenging for new users to adopt effectively.
  • AWS SDK version dependency
The library depends on an older version of the AWS SDK for JavaScript, which may conflict with projects using the newer AWS SDK v3 and could miss out on performance improvements and features in updated SDKs.
  • Limited error handling flexibility
The built-in error handling mechanisms are relatively basic, and handling partial failures or implementing sophisticated retry logic for individual object operations requires additional custom code from the developer.
  • Narrow scope of functionality
The library is tightly focused on S3 object processing and does not integrate with other AWS services or provide utilities beyond basic map/filter/reduce operations, limiting its usefulness in more complex data pipeline scenarios.

Analysis of s3-lambda

Overall verdict

  • s3-lambda is a useful Node.js library for performing operations like map, reduce, and filter directly on S3 objects using Lambda, making it good for developers who need efficient, serverless-based batch processing of S3 data without managing infrastructure. It is well suited for smaller to medium projects but may not be actively maintained for enterprise-scale needs.

Why this product is good

  • Simplifies common S3 batch operations (map, filter, reduce) with a clean, functional API
  • Leverages AWS Lambda for scalable, serverless parallel processing of S3 objects
  • Reduces boilerplate code for iterating over and transforming large numbers of S3 objects
  • Open-source and free to use, allowing customization for specific workflows
  • Integrates well with existing AWS infrastructure and Node.js applications

Recommended for

  • Developers building serverless data pipelines on AWS
  • Teams needing to process or transform large sets of S3 objects without provisioning servers
  • Node.js developers looking for a functional programming approach to S3 operations
  • Projects with batch processing needs that fit within Lambda's execution limits
  • Prototyping or small-to-medium scale ETL tasks involving S3 data

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Cala HQ and s3-lambda.

What makes your product unique?

Cala HQ's answer

CalaHQ combines the structure of a proper leave management system with the simplicity small teams actually need. It supports flexible leave policies, automatic allowances, carry-over rules and local public holidays without adding the complexity of a full HR platform. All core features are included, and teams of up to five users can use it for free.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Cala HQ's answer

CalaHQ is built for teams that want to manage time off properly without paying per user for a large HR suite. It is quick to set up, easy for employees and managers to understand, and uses predictable team-based pricing. Remote and international teams can manage different local holiday calendars while keeping one consistent view of leave across the company.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Cala HQ's answer

CalaHQ is primarily built for small and growing companies, especially remote and international teams. It is commonly used by founders, operations managers, office managers, People teams and team leads who are responsible for approving leave and planning team availability.

What's the story behind your product?

Cala HQ's answer

We built CalaHQ because managing time off should not require a dedicated HR department.

Many small teams still rely on spreadsheets, emails and chat messages to track leave. That works until requests are missed, balances become unclear and nobody has a reliable view of who is away.

CalaHQ was created to give those teams a proper system without turning leave management into another complicated HR project.
