Features and specs

What each product offers, as listed by its team.

Buildah 5 features
UtilityLab.dev 3 features
  • Lightweight
Buildah is a tool focused solely on building OCI and Docker-compatible containers, which makes it less resource-intensive compared to other container building solutions that include additional components like container runtimes.
  • Daemon-less
Unlike Docker, Buildah does not require a running daemon, meaning it can be used in environments where a daemon is not desired or feasible, enhancing security and reducing footprint.
  • Flexibility
Buildah provides flexibility by allowing precise control over container image creation, enabling advanced scenarios like building images from scratch, adding content at various stages, and using alternative base images.
  • Security
Running without a daemon improves security by minimizing attack surfaces and permissions needed for building images, allowing for container creation and management by unprivileged users.
  • Integration with Podman
Buildah integrates well with Podman, allowing users to manage containers and images without requiring additional integrations, as both are part of the same toolset for comprehensive container management.

Possible disadvantages

  • Steep Learning Curve
Users already familiar with Docker might find Buildah’s command-line interface and functionality to be different, necessitating a learning curve to effectively utilize its capabilities.
  • Less Mature Ecosystem
Compared to Docker, Buildah has a smaller community and fewer integrations with third-party tools or cloud platforms, potentially limiting its use in complex or niche scenarios.
  • Lack of Windows Support
As of now, Buildah primarily supports Linux platforms, which can be a limitation for developers using or targeting Windows environments.
  • Limited GUI Tools
Buildah primarily operates through a command-line interface, with fewer graphical user interface options available, which might not appeal to users who prefer visual management tools.
  • Documentation Gaps
Although improving, Buildah’s documentation can be less comprehensive and more challenging to navigate than Docker's, potentially making troubleshooting or advanced usage more difficult.
  • Cost Calculation Tool
Per-call and monthly estimates based on input/output tokens and volume
  • Privacy
All calculations run locally in-browser, no data uploaded
  • Supported Models
GPT-4o, GPT-4o Mini, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Claude 3 Opus, Gemini 1.5 Pro, Gemini 2.0 Flash, DeepSeek V4 Flash

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Buildah and UtilityLab.dev.

What makes your product unique?

UtilityLab.dev's answer:

Most LLM cost calculators are either spreadsheets or require signing up for an API. AI Cost Simulator is a free, browser-based tool that works instantly — no account, no installation, no data upload. It supports the widest range of models (GPT-4o, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Gemini 1.5 Pro, DeepSeek V4 Flash, and more) with both per-call and monthly volume estimates in one view.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

UtilityLab.dev's answer:

Vanilla JavaScript, HTML, and CSS — no frameworks, no bundlers. All cost calculations happen client-side. The tool is deployed as a static site on Cloudflare Pages for global low-latency access.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

UtilityLab.dev's answer:

It's the only zero-friction cost estimator. Competitors either lock features behind sign-up walls, only support one model family, or require you to dig through separate pricing pages. AI Cost Simulator gives you a side-by-side comparison of all major LLM providers in one page — and everything runs locally in your browser, so your pricing data never leaves your machine.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

UtilityLab.dev's answer:

Developers, indie hackers, and technical founders who are evaluating LLM APIs for their next project. Also product managers and engineering leads doing cost analysis before committing to a model provider at scale.

What's the story behind your product?

UtilityLab.dev's answer:

When building AI-powered features, we realized every model provider publishes pricing differently — per-token, per-character, per-request — and there's no single place to compare them. Instead of bookmarking five pricing pages and building a spreadsheet, we built a dead-simple comparison tool. We open-sourced the approach and made it free so other developers don't have to waste time doing manual math.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

UtilityLab.dev's answer:

Since it's a free browser tool with no sign-up, we don't track individual users. It's used by developers and teams evaluating LLM costs across startups, agencies, and enterprise engineering teams.
