Possible disadvantages

  • Session Limits
Free accounts have limited session times, which can be restrictive for comprehensive testing.
  • Performance
The performance and responsiveness can sometimes be slower compared to testing on a local machine.
  • Cost
Advanced features and unlimited testing require a paid subscription, which might not be cost-effective for small teams or solo developers.
  • Limited Advanced Features
Some advanced testing features, like automated screenshot comparisons or parallel testing, may be missing or less developed compared to competitors.
  • Browser and OS Availability
While Browserling supports a wide range of browsers and operating systems, it may not cover all possible combinations needed for exhaustive testing.
  • Autoscaling virtual devices
Android emulators and iOS simulators, provisioned fresh for every run and destroyed when it ends
  • Pool sized from history
Device count is chosen per run from your suite's historical duration, targeting 15 minutes. No parallel slots to buy
  • Per-test retries
A failed test is rerun on a different device; tests that pass on retry are reported as flaky, not failed
  • Preventive retries
Tests with a recently unstable history are retried from the start, so flakes stay off the critical path
  • Frameworks
Espresso and instrumentation tests on Android, XCUITest on iOS, and Maestro flows on both
  • One CLI command
    marathon-cloud run android --application app.apk --test-application test.apk

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing browserling and Marathon Cloud.

What makes your product unique?

Marathon Cloud's answer:

The device pool is sized for every run from your suite's own history, targeting 15 minutes, so there is no parallel device count to buy or tune. Failed tests are retried individually on a different device, and tests with a flaky history are retried preventively, so the report separates flaky from failed. It is built on Marathon, the open-source mobile test runner, so there is no lock-in: the same runner can bring execution back in-house.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Marathon Cloud's answer:

You pay $2 per hour per Android device and $3 per hour per iOS device, billed per second, instead of monthly per-parallel plans. You can start the same day with 50 free device hours and one CLI command, without a sales call. It runs Espresso, XCUITest and Maestro on emulators and simulators from any CI, which is where most UI suites run anyway; real-device clouds are better when a test truly needs physical hardware.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Marathon Cloud's answer:

Mobile engineering teams, including Android and iOS developers, SDETs and platform or DevOps engineers, who want their full UI test suite to run on every pull request. Typically companies with an Espresso, XCUITest or Maestro suite that has outgrown one CI machine or a per-parallel device cloud.

What's the story behind your product?

Marathon Cloud's answer:

Marathon started in 2018 as an open-source test runner for Android and iOS, built to make large UI suites fast and stable through smart batching, sharding and per-test retries. It is used by teams running some of the largest consumer apps. Marathon Cloud launched in 2022 as the hosted version: the same engine, with devices, scaling and retries handled for you. MarathonLabs (TestWise Pte. Ltd., Singapore) is bootstrapped and profitable.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Marathon Cloud's answer:

Kotlin (the open-source Marathon runner), Go+Rust (cloud services and the CLI), Svelte and TypeScript (web), gRPC, Docker, Android emulators, and iOS simulators on Apple hardware.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

Marathon Cloud's answer:

  • Tinder
  • Careem
  • Peloton
  • LTK
  • SafetyCulture
  • Plata
