I've use it instead of Firebase on a 15$ DigitalOcean droplet and saved around ~$150 a month. Managing my own infra does take some extra time, but definitely worth it. The APIs and SDK are also surprisingly much easier to consume than Firebase. Waiting for the cloud version.

Initially, I was using the Supabase free tier, but I was hitting the limits, and my app was becoming stale. Then I switched to Appwrite. I would try renting first and when you are happy where you are and with your job for awhile consider getting a new homebuyers loan. Also, you need to work on your credit for that to happen. Call a bank and ask about a prepaid credit card. Then use that card to pay a small monthly bill (3-7% of the allotted credit) that you can have taken straight out of your checking account (at that same bank or a different one).... Tough choice between Minneapolis and Portland. I'd stay away from DC personally. I love it here in Minnesota, but have friends just outside Portland who like it there as well. Both areas have good schools in the suburbs and are great cities.
