SpawnWP is a free and open-source, self-hosted WordPress development lab for creating isolated, disposable WordPress environments on your own Debian or Ubuntu server.

It is designed for development, testing, debugging, plugin/theme evaluation, demos and experimentation โ€” not as a traditional hosting control panel.

Each WordPress instance runs in its own isolated Docker stack and can be created, reset, snapshotted or destroyed whenever needed. SpawnWP also includes a web-based cockpit for managing environments without having to work exclusively from the command line.

Key features include:

  • Disposable WordPress sites on your own VPS
  • Isolated Docker-based environments
  • Multiple PHP and WordPress versions
  • Create, reset, snapshot and destroy sites
  • Blueprints for quickly reproducing predefined WordPress setups
  • Built-in Mailpit for testing outgoing email
  • Adminer for database management
  • Developer and QA tools such as Plugin Check, Theme Check, PHPCS/WPCS, PHPStan and Query Monitor
  • HTTPS support
  • Pre-built images for faster environment creation
  • Web-based management cockpit
  • SpawnWP Deploy, an optional plugin for capturing an existing WordPress site and turning it into a reusable blueprint

Unlike hosted services such as InstaWP or TasteWP, SpawnWP runs entirely on infrastructure you control. There are no per-site fees, artificial site limits or recurring SaaS subscriptions imposed by SpawnWP itself โ€” your limits are essentially the resources available on your server.

SpawnWP started as a personal tool for quickly spinning up WordPress test environments and was later released publicly as an MIT-licensed open-source project.

It is particularly useful for WordPress developers, agencies, plugin and theme authors, QA testers and anyone who frequently needs clean WordPress installations without repeatedly configuring servers from scratch.
