BrowserPod is the API that turns any browser tab into a virtual Linux machine to run server-side processes client-side without cloud infrastructure. With its own client-side filesystem, syscalls and networking, it turns the browser into a sandboxed developer environment to run AI agents and the code they write. Developers can also transform their documentation spaces into interactive environments, building playgrounds where visitors can run full code snippets for free.

Because BrowserPod doesn't rely on cloud infrastructure, it is free for non-production use with 1,000 hours of free production use on the free plan, and only $0.01 per her of compute after.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Amazon AWS and BrowserPod.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

BrowserPod's answer:

We built BrowserPod for two major audiences. The first is developers who think about the economics of resourcing tools they create, both in terms of bare metal resource and unit cost. BrowserPod offers a solution to developers who want to make a development tool widely available, but don't want to pay to provision the cloud compute needed to scale its usage.

BrowserPod is scalable by design. Users commit their own device's resources to run the solution, rather than the developer having to provision additional resources from a cloud provider. Users' devices generally have more compute than they need to run their day-to-day workflows, so it makes sense for developers to leverage that idle resource, rather than create additional resource.

The second audience is major commercial solutions where unit cost really determines the viability of their business. For instance, any AI application that creates code needs a development environment with the tooling needed to write and run code. The solution most businesses reach for are cloud-based. But this is costly because there are real data centers that need to be paid for. BrowserPod doesn't provision any additional resources; it leverages existing compute on the user's device, massively cutting costs.

What makes your product unique?

BrowserPod's answer:

BrowserPod is the only API that turns the browser tab into a multi-runtime virtual machine, which means developers can create applications with server-side processes running directly in the browser.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

BrowserPod's answer:

BrowserPod is more complementary than it is competitive with providers that sit in the same category. Cloud sandbox solutions like Daytona, Modal and E2B are brilliant, but have different use cases. BrowserPod is ultimately the solution you turn to when you want to take advantage of client-side computation at scale with unlimited concurrency, without having to pay for the additional cloud compute provisions required with alternatives.

WebContainers is an excellent peer of BrowserPod, but is no longer supported directly by StackBlitz. It's also missing important features, like multiple runtimes, a sophisticated filesystem and portal features.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

BrowserPod's answer:

  • WebAssembly
  • Linux
  • BusyBox

What's the story behind your product?

BrowserPod's answer:

BrowserPod is built by Leaning Technologies, the team behind WebVM, CheerpJ and CheerpX. WebAssembly solutions with over one million users, that have been battle-tested by some of the world's biggest organizations. For years, Leaning Tech has provided free-to-use tools for developers and commercial solutions for businesses looking to modernize their technology stack.

With AI code generation becoming ubiquitous across software and the cost of cloud compute increasingly at a staggering rate, Leaning Technologies expertise with WebAssembly feels perfectly suited for a solution. BrowserPod is that solution.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

BrowserPod's answer:

BrowserPod's built by Leaning Technologies whose customers include:

  • ADP
  • EDF
  • NASA
  • Siemens
  • TicketMaster

The best cloud platform out there

You could say a lot of things about AWS, but among the cloud platforms (and I've used quite a few) AWS takes the cake. It is logically structured, you can get through its documentation relatively easily, you have a great variety of tools and services to choose from [from AWS itself and from third-party developers in their marketplace]. There is a learning curve, there is quite a lot of it, but it is still way easier than some other platforms. I've used and abused AWS and EC2 specifically and for me it is the best.

๐Ÿ‘ Pros:    Great documentation|Website structure visualization|You have control over everything|Flexibility
๐Ÿ‘Ž Cons:    Learning curve|A lot of dashboards for different things

  • Why Your File Upload Endpoint Times Out at 4GB
The first pattern is direct-to-storage. The client uploads chunks directly to an object storage service like Amazon S3 using pre-signed URLs. The application server creates the upload session and grants permission but never sees the file bytes. This pattern scales well because the application servers do not handle the upload bandwidth. - Source: dev.to / 2 months ago
