Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Chalmsy.
  1. What makes Chalmsy unique?

Most business software added an AI feature to an existing product. Chalmsy was built the other way round: the AI is what you work with, and the software is what it works on.

The practical difference is that it learns your business instead of asking you to configure it. It drafts proposals in a voice learned from proposals you have already sent, and prices them from your own materials, labour rates and markup rules rather than a generic template.

And the thread does not break. An accepted proposal becomes a project, then an invoice, then a line in your books, with nothing re-typed between tools.

It also wears your brand rather than ours. Your logo, colours and typefaces dress the workspace and every document that reaches a client, on your own subdomain.

  2. Why should a person choose Chalmsy over its competitors?

The usual setup is three tools: a front-office suite for proposals and payments, a spreadsheet or trade calculator for costing the actual work, and an accounting package for the books. They do not talk to each other, so the same job gets typed in three times.

Chalmsy covers that whole span in one thread, and prices the work from your real costs rather than leaving the arithmetic to a spreadsheet at eleven at night.

Two practical differences. Seats are included in the plan price, so growing the team does not multiply the bill. And moving your data across - clients, past proposals, invoice history, price lists, brand - is done for you at no charge on every plan, while your current system keeps running.

Where the alternatives are still ahead: they have far more third-party integrations and years more polish. We publish an honest comparison rather than pretending otherwise.

  3. How would you describe the primary audience of Chalmsy?

Small and mid-sized businesses that quote bespoke work rather than sell a fixed catalogue: florists, event planners, wedding and event venues, interior designers, consultancies, construction and trades.

Typically one to twenty people and owner-run, where the person who wins the work is also the person who prices it, invoices it and reconciles it at month end. They are usually replacing a spreadsheet, an accounting package and a lot of evening admin.

Chalmsy needs a Google account - Gmail or Google Workspace - because proposals and invoices go out from the business's own address rather than a no-reply robot. If the business email lives on Microsoft, Chalmsy is not the right fit yet.

  4. What's the story behind Chalmsy?

Chalmsy began as software for one business that needed it and could not buy it. A floral studio was quoting bespoke work from spreadsheets and memory, and every tool on the market either priced a fixed catalogue or assumed you had a sales team.

So it was built for that business first: proposals in her own voice, priced from her own stem costs and markups, wearing her own brand rather than a vendor's.

Once it worked, the interesting part was how little of it was really about flowers. An enquiry, a bespoke price built from real costs, a document that has to look like you, then an invoice and a set of books - that is equally the shape of an event planner, a venue, an interior designer, a consultancy and a builder.

So the business-specific parts became templates and Chalmsy became the product. That first studio is now simply one tenant on it.

  5. Which are the primary technologies used for building Chalmsy?

Postgres on Supabase, with row-level security doing the tenant isolation at the database rather than in application code, and TypeScript edge functions for anything that touches a third-party API.

The front end is a progressive web app, installable on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. Hosting is on Vercel.

The AI is Claude, by Anthropic. It drafts; a person always reviews and sends, and customer workspace content is not used to train models.

Integrations: Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Drive), QuickBooks Online and Stripe. Sign-in is Google OAuth, so there is no Chalmsy password to steal.
