Use ubuntu or debian until you get comfortable. I recommend at lest doing this once when you have time and a free machine, it will teach you a lot. Eventually you'll enjoy Slack and Arch installs a lot more than ubuntu and debain and mb BSD for some machines like your own encrypted cloud. Kali is just preloaded with tools for pentesting, you can install those tools on any machine, the ditro of linux is... Source: over 3 years ago

Black Arch for serious pen testers not for posers who run Kali as a daily driver. Source: almost 4 years ago
  • how do I add penetration tools in vanilla arch
If you want to jump ship, consider https://blackarch.org/ but don't come here asking for help (and given their install instructions, you might very well need assistance). Source: about 4 years ago
  • Protip: Use Wikipedia to find the proper download links for distros and software.
There is also blackarch.org and blackarch.io, I really wonder if those isos cotain malware in some sort. Its funny that this tactic is even used on linux distros. Source: over 4 years ago
  • Viewing the list of blocked sites
I am studying in a very networking-restrictive(oppressive, if you will) college(where sites like twitch.tv, kali.org, blackarch.org, steam(basically anything related to entertainment), fandom wiki, and even chess.com is blocked). Outgoing ssh port 22 is blocked so I cannot ssh into any servers outside the university network. VPN is blocked but thankfully wireguard isn't so I can bypass it. Source: almost 5 years ago

Also, on the same day the best wishes blog post on blackarch.io released, the still active and rebranded official twitter account on blackarch.org posted the same message. blackarch.io is just an old domain. Source: almost 5 years ago
  • Is there a difference between these two 'black arch' distributions?
The github link in the best wishes blog post on blackarch.io links to the repo of blackarch.org. My assumption is they switched domains. Source: almost 5 years ago
  • Any help would be appreciated
I got an iso image (BlackArch Linux 64 bit Full ISO) dile from the official site (blackarch.org) and tried installing it on Virtualbox. Things seemed okay until I rebooted after the installation, but after reboot, it doesn't boot and stops at "booting with the initial ramdisk". Source: about 5 years ago

About tools, I'd like to suggest two of my favourite pentest distibs: Parrot Security and Blackarch. And as /u/win10-1-0002 said, running your own Honeypots are the easiest and fastest (legal) way to practice and learn by doing. Source: about 5 years ago

Summary of the public mentions of BlackArch

BlackArch Linux is a versatile and robust Linux distribution, specifically tailored to meet the demanding needs of penetration testers and security researchers. Rooted in Arch Linux, it is renowned for its lightweight framework and the inclusion of over 2,500 cybersecurity tools, designed to address a wide array of security testing scenarios. This abundance of pre-installed tools positions BlackArch as a powerful option for professionals requiring comprehensive and readily available security resources.

Popularity and Use Cases

BlackArch has gained traction in the cybersecurity community due to its extensive tool repository, frequent updates, and compatibility with virtually any hardware owing to its lightweight nature. It can be run as a live system from a USB stick or CD, or installed on a computer, offering flexibility in deployment. Despite its relatively recent inception, this distribution has carved out a niche as a reliable operating system among security experts.

Comparison with Competitors

In comparison to prominent competitor distributions such as Kali Linux and Parrot OS, BlackArch offers a more expansive set of tools, although it arguably requires a steeper learning curve due to its Arch Linux base. This factor has led some users to commend its advanced features, suggesting BlackArch is better suited to experienced users or those prepared to invest time in mastering the system.

Community Perspectives

Discussions among users indicate that while BlackArch is favored for its advanced capabilities, it lacks the widespread community support available to more established distributions like Kali Linux. This has led to mixed sentiments; experienced users appreciate BlackArch's comprehensive toolkit and flexibility, whereas newer users comment on potential challenges, including installation complexities and the need for familiarity with Arch Linux's manual setup.

Notable Features

BlackArch's adaptability extends to its aesthetic choices, offering desktop environments such as Awesome, Blackbox, and Fluxbox, allowing users to tailor their experience. Articles across various forums frequently cite BlackArch as one of the top Linux distributions for ensuring privacy and security, pointing to its continually evolving toolset and infrastructure.

Controversies and Concerns

Despite its strengths, some users express cautiousness about potential security vulnerabilities, particularly concerning different domain names claiming legitimacy, such as blackarch.org and blackarch.io. These sentiments underscore the importance of verifying sources for software downloads.

In summary, BlackArch Linux is highly regarded in the security field for its expansive toolkit, forming an integral part of many security professionals' arsenals. While its powerful features and frequent tool updates appeal to advanced users, those new to Linux or cybersecurity may find it challenging and perhaps better served starting with more beginner-friendly distributions. Nonetheless, for those willing to navigate its setup and configuration intricacies, BlackArch offers a robust platform for both learning and executing security research tasks.
