I know a lot of you probably do not care that AltspaceVR is going away in March but I will miss it dearly. Sauce : https://altvr.com/ I was on the platform at the very beginning using an opendive 3D printed DIY headset my phone and trinus. I then made the switch to GearVR in 2017 and had great fun playing cards against humanity until they ended mobile support. I still visited occasionally the past few years on... For those who are unaware of the Microsoft metaverse, it is called AltSpace (altvr.com) and it was pretty much one of the most successful VR metaverses around until Microsoft bought it in 2017. Source: over 3 years ago

One specific sub-flavor of this sort of chat tool you might encounter are VR spaces like AltSpace, VRChat, or Mozilla Hubs that are primarily focused on VR but also usually support flat displays or smartphones. - Source: dev.to / over 4 years ago
One option would be to take advantage of a platform like AltspaceVR. If you can get something into Unity you can get it into AltspaceVR using their Unity Uploader tool. Then you can base a "world" on your template upload and take advantage of the platform's multiplayer/social features to show off your content in person, so to speak. You can keep your worlds private if you like and use a whitelist to allow only... Source: over 4 years ago

You can do this in AltspaceVR as well using the Web Projector. Read the tutorial but in a nutshell you can stream an Edge browser tab (or your entire desktop) into any virtual world that you have control over and broadcast it to everyone there. This is by far my preferred solution for co-watching because there are no locomotion restrictions and you can build a world around the virtual screen while you're... Source: over 4 years ago

Based on a recent evaluation of public sentiment and product mentions, AltspaceVR surfaces as a notable player in the realm of virtual reality (VR) social platforms despite its ultimate cessation in early 2023. Launched initially in 2015 and acquired by Microsoft in 2017, AltspaceVR garnered attention for its capabilities in hosting virtual events, creating immersive experiences, and offering a wide array of social activities. While it was eventually overshadowed by competing platforms, AltspaceVR left a lasting impression on its community and established a legacy as an early pioneer in the VR social space.
AltspaceVR was lauded for its inclusive environment that catered to varied interests, allowing users to create personalized virtual worlds and participate in a plethora of social events. The platform supported diverse activities such as concerts, comedy shows, church gatherings, and professional meetups, presenting a myriad of options that resonated well with its user base. A particularly praised feature was its world-building toolset, prominently the Unity Uploader, which enabled users to project their creative visions into shared, interactive spaces.
From a technological standpoint, AltspaceVR was accessible across a spectrum of devices, including VR headsets like the Oculus Quest and desktop environments, which allowed users to engage through different levels of immersion. Users appreciated its simplicity and user-friendliness, with many praising its flexibility in operating even on basic hardware setups, exemplified by successful integrations on older systems such as a Pentium 4.
The announcement of its shutdown evoked a mix of nostalgia and disappointment among its community members. Testimonials indicated that AltspaceVR was not only a platform for virtual interaction but also a venue for profound social connections and creativity, entwined with users' personal storytelling. Long-term users reminisced about the friendships and memories forged, often attributing a persistent sentimental value to their experiences within AltspaceVR.
Conversely, the platform's eventual decline was evidenced by criticisms regarding its dated interface and dwindling innovation in the face of rising competitors like VRChat and Rec Room. Compared to the dynamic adaptability and graphical richness of these alternatives, AltspaceVR's offerings seemed to lag, necessitating more significant updates to maintain interest and engagement.
Microsoft's acquisition in 2017 positioned AltspaceVR as part of a larger strategy to explore VR capabilities and integrate them into enterprise solutions like Microsoft Mesh. Users viewed this integration as a commendable step towards enhancing virtual collaboration tools within professional and educational contexts.
However, despite Microsoft's backing, AltspaceVR's distinct identity and pioneering ethos seemed to diminish over time, contributing to sentiments labeling its experience as "depressing" or unmet expectations in its role within Microsoft's broader metaverse initiatives.
AltspaceVR's journey as a social VR platform marked a significant chapter in the evolution of virtual worlds. It embodied both the potential and challenges inherent in creating a compelling virtual social space. Although its official closure marks an endpoint for the platform, its impact and the community it fostered underscore important learnings for future endeavors in the virtual reality domain. AltspaceVR serves as a reminder of the importance of community-centric features and adaptive innovation to sustain relevance and user engagement amidst a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
