I too wanted to do this but didn't want to open any ports or anything for security reasons, I found a neat program https://tailscale.com/ It allows you to setup a tunnel between a bunch of devices but allows normal traffic to act as normal, I use it to access my SMB shares all the time. Was incredibly easy to setup too.
