  • Ubuntu for a Mac user (SWE)
And, albert https://albertlauncher.github.io/ would be the default spotlight alternative, but in my experience it's not that snappy and doesn't behave exactly as you'd expect. Imo the default gnome search function is fine. Source: about 1 year ago
  • Albert launcher update!
It took quite some time, but after years of overhaul, testing, and patching I'd like to introduce Albert. New features (since 0.18) include an abstract plugin system, custom triggers, an API which got more developer friendly and of course feature rich for both C++ and Python plugins, plugins come with more features, search is even faster, UI is nicer, Qt6, C++20… Give it a try and let me know what you think. Alfred/Spotlight on macOS. Albert and GNOME Search or whatever, on Linux. Windows Search on Windows. (Windows Search doesn't work very well for me, but it's something.) https://www.alfredapp.com/ https://albertlauncher.github.io/ https://help.gnome.org/users/gnome-help/stable/files-search.html.en. - Source: Hacker News / almost 2 years ago
  • People who don't like KDE, in which aspects is it "too much"?

  • A Look at Curiosity - A MacOS Spotlight search style app available for Linux
We have had awesome applications that do exactly this, while being fully FOSS, for some time. Albert and cerebro just to name a few. (I use Albert myself all the time and it is fantastic! And extensible!). Source: over 2 years ago
  • Is there a file searcher for Manjaro which operates like this mock-up I created?
Coming from Mac OS I missed something similar to spotlight/Alfred. I settled with Albert launcher. It’s pretty customisable and light. Source: over 2 years ago
  • My approach about how Gnome 40 should be implemented in the next Ubuntu releases, Using dash to panel as a single bar to the left, with all the items and icons we as USERS need to stay productive, focused and with a more professional look.
You can install Albert if you want something more minimal: https://albertlauncher.github.io/. Source: over 2 years ago

  • Remove "applications" text from top bar
I am pretty sure you cannot change the button text at least not without some under the hood tinkering, but if you want the spotlightesque launcher try ulauncher or Albert. Source: almost 3 years ago

I always liked Alfred: https://albertlauncher.github.io/. Source: almost 3 years ago
  • Newbie asking for help
If you go down this road, you may want to also consider Albert (https://albertlauncher.github.io). I have Albert bound to the superkey so that one key brings up the Albert. Here's what my screen looks like (no bottom panel). I have Cario on left, but could be on bottom. Source: almost 3 years ago
