  • Father and Son family time not working :( LAN or Portforwarding hosting server on same network not working
Hi there, I've tried hosting a server on my computer and then both my Dad and I try to play together. However, it's only worked once or twice when I hosted from playtogether.gg or when it worked once with the zerotier.com method. I've portforwarded, I've made sure both our firewalls were allowing 10578, nothing seems to work. We both have Skyrim Together fully installed on our SSE, and we just want it to work :(... • I'm speechless for services like Tailscale, what's the downside?
I lived under a rock, and only today I found a service called Tailscale.com . I think other provider offers the same thing, one alternative seems to be zerotier.com. Source: over 3 years ago
  • Lab simulators
I set up EVE-ng on a google cloud VM. Then immediately the question was how do I get access to the lab equip? I found this video explaining how to set up a virtual nic on the eve-ng VM, connect that to a cloud network in eve-ng, then connect mgmt interfaces from your devices to that. Then he used zerotier.com to setup a quick ssl vpn. Now I can turn off all inbound access to the VM and access all my lab... Source: over 3 years ago
  • Cheap and cheerful router with block list?
I prefer Routerboard with arm cpu, because it support running ZeroTier and docker containers. Source: about 4 years ago
  • Connecting to my business local network from home
I suggest using ZeroTier, similar to VPN but without hassle and public ip. Source: about 4 years ago
  • Want to access Homebridge UI remotely. Homebridge is installed on a Pi 4
I would suggest you look into using Zerotier (zerotier.com). It is easy to install alongside the homebridge software. You'll need the zerotier app from the App Store on the other end but that is about it. Source: about 4 years ago
  • VPN Server in AWS or Azure?
If you want easy private access without needing to opening ports or worry about static ip addresses, you could do worse than to consider one of the newer alternatives - https://enclave.io, https://tailscale.com or https://zerotier.com. Source: about 4 years ago
  • Is it possible to have remote connections on starlink
I read other replies and tunneling is one way. There are also some small footprint tools like tailscale.com and zerotier.com. Source: about 4 years ago
  • Help: can't connect remotely with SSH from a different wifi
Then once you've done that go back to zerotier.com page and click on your network and scroll down to where it says Members and your machine should be listed. Tick the box under Auth? And then add the name of the machine like Debian NAS so you know which one is which and it should be good to go. The IP address you need to use for SSH should be under Managed IP's. Works great for me. Works from Windows, Mac, Android... Source: over 4 years ago
  • Any chance to have a routable IPv4 or IPv6
Something simpler might be https://zerotier.com - they have a free service level and make it really easy to link multiple sites together, might be worth a look? Source: over 4 years ago
  • Reaching out to zerotier.com even though Self Hosted
The title really sums it up. I self host a zerotier server for my endpoints to communicate with, however, after running some packet capture on the host (not server) it is reaching out to root-mia-01, etc all hosted at zerotier.com. I'm a little concerned that the connection is still not exclusively going through the self hosted part. Any thoughts on why this may be, or a correction on my fears? Source: over 4 years ago
  • Trying to understand Remote Access as a noob
ZeroTier or tailscale will be easier than a VPN. Might be worth looking into for you. Source: over 4 years ago
  • I have some issues setting up a server
Research ZeroTier One. It creates a virtual network. Be aware that it is quite difficult to use - the interface is okay but there's a lot of settings usual people don't understand. Source: over 4 years ago
  • WireGuard Access server now supports IPv6
Https://zerotier.com/ The managed backend/NAT broker is free up to 50 machines, or you can run the open source server yourself. - Source: Hacker News / over 4 years ago
  • Exposure of vulnerable machines for remote access (for maintenance) best practice
One option is to use a VPN established as a peer-to-peer overlay network with the vendor. This has the advantage of not needing to run a VPN server, and not needing to open the firewall as the link is established using only outbound traffic on both sides. Have you considered https://enclave.io, https://zerotier.com or https://tailscale.com? Source: over 4 years ago
  • Access LTE 4G Router (no static IP)
If you're able to put something like a raspberry pi on the network alongside the CCTV camera you could then use something like https://enclave.io, https://zerotier.com or https://tailscale.com for remote access which would let you ignore the IP. Source: over 4 years ago
  • Remote access to shares folder?
Install https://zerotier.com/ on all participating computers (also on the Unraid server, it is a docker container). Get an account on https://my.zerotier.com/ to control your networks. Source: over 4 years ago
  • Looking for advice in building a cheap server for hosting dedicated game servers
Ah yeah thatโ€™s true. Iโ€™ve always used Zerotier for all of my game servers, so I never have to deal with open ports and all of the security issues from having it open to the internet. I definitely think VPNs and similar technologies such as zerotier are the way to go with private game servers. Source: over 4 years ago
  • Raspberry pi as a jump host
If for some reason you prefer a different solution, I keep hearing great things about ZeroTier. Keep in mind though that it offers nothing over a VPN, and unlike a VPN you canโ€™t put geofencing on it, or have your UDM run IDS/IPS on it. Source: over 4 years ago
  • Looking for advice on hybrid cloud setup
As a founder, I've found time to be one of the most precious resources you have when building a start-up. You might find it useful to look into something like https://enclave.io/, https://tailscale.com/ or https://zerotier.com/ for your private networking requirements - it will be one less server for you to run (and pay for) and will probably save you time too. Summary of the public mentions of ZeroTier

ZeroTier is gaining growing attention as a versatile and robust solution in the realm of networking, where it acts as more than just a traditional VPN. Positioned alongside competitors such as Hamachi, Tailscale, OpenVPN, and WireGuard, ZeroTier carves its niche by providing virtual networking solutions that cater to both individual users and large-scale organizations. Recent discussions and mentions across various technical forums and articles have painted a comprehensive picture of the public opinion surrounding ZeroTier, emphasizing its strengths and areas of improvement.

Versatility and Multi-Platform Support

One of the key merits of ZeroTier is its cross-platform compatibility. It supports Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux, enabling a unified solution for diverse environments. This feature has positioned ZeroTier as an attractive alternative to Hamachi, particularly for virtual LAN gaming, where smooth connectivity across different devices is crucial. The software's ability to run on almost all operating systems, combined with its availability as an open-source application, significantly enhances its accessibility and appeal.

Advanced Networking Solutions

Beyond its function as a VPN provider, ZeroTier inherently supports Software Defined Networking (SDN) and SD-WAN capabilities. This positions it as a hypervisor in networking, allowing users to create private virtual networks that ensure secure communication between devices. ZeroTier's P2P functionality further ensures safe connections between computers, cloud, and mobile devices. Its robust encryption algorithms extend its utility beyond personal use, making it suitable for corporate environments where security and privacy are paramount.

Ease of Use and Community Support

ZeroTier's user interface is praised for being intuitive and user-friendly, making it accessible even for those less technically inclined. While some users have noted minor challenges in configuration, the broad and active community backing ZeroTier often steps in to assist novice users, ensuring that help is available if difficulties arise. Additionally, for more advanced support, users can opt for a paid plan.

Use Cases and Flexibility

The applicationโ€™s flexibility is evident in its varied use cases. Users have reported leveraging ZeroTier for setting up private game servers, lab environments on cloud services like Google Cloud, and connecting to business networks without the hassle of traditional VPN setups. Its ability to circumvent the need for port forwarding and static IP addresses is frequently highlighted as a benefit, especially for home and small business users seeking straightforward, hassle-free connectivity solutions.

Areas for Improvement

Despite its many benefits, ZeroTier is not without its challenges. Some users have expressed concerns over complex configurations and occasional connectivity issues when self-hosting. Moreover, while ZeroTier offers robust networking capabilities, it does not provide geofencing or integrated intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), which are common in traditional VPN setups.

In summary, ZeroTier stands out in the network virtualization landscape for its versatility, comprehensive platform support, and advanced features like SDN. Its strong community presence and ease of use further bolster its standing as a preferred choice for secure, scalable, and seamless virtual networking. However, ease of setup and some advanced VPN features could still see improvement to enhance the user experience further.
