  When I start writing a short story, I know from the beginning whether it's going to be a big or a small one. My small stories are usually around 500 - 600 words, that I then have to file down to 500. Big stories are like 700 - 900 words, much harder to compress, so I write them directly in wordcounter.net to begin with. • I'm currently writing an academic paper, and I realized I have a habit of starting my sentences with a dependent clause, as in "On this note," "With this in mind," "As...," "In this context," and other variations. Do you have any suggestions on how to avoid this or how to structure sentences better?

  If I'm writing a fic for a tumblr prompt, I typically write it in the tumblr post. Then I copy/paste it into wordcounter.net to see if I want to crosspost. (Given that I crosspost to both AO3 and FFN, and I have to come up with a title, the cost/benefit analysis makes me feel like it isn't worth it unless the fic is 500+ words.). • Do you guys use Grammarly or any other editing program to edit your fics?

  These are my sins too, so I'll recommend hemingway app and wordcounter — they're both free to use in the browser which is handy, although I went ahead and bought hemingway because I like to be able to work offline. You can even scale up the keyword density specs in wordcounter to catch overused phrases. Source: over 3 years ago
