I totally agree with the approach of having metrics in the BI tool - it makes it easier to collaborate around this metrics layer, and makes it easier to surface any potential staleness issues to business users directly. Not necessarily based on Excel, but Whaly (http://whaly.io) has a self-service layer that's pretty intuitive to your end users and they can analyze/access data autonomously and push it out in excel or whatever formats.
